thinking about getting a quadstick gaming controller

but I can use my right, this means that I can use my mouse, but I cannot use WASD to move around,

How about a mouse that also has a joystick axis... and a ton of buttons?

It has interchangable feet (magnetic, so easily one-handable) for either L-R tilt, or full 4-way tilting.
13 extra buttons, to assign various commands, 5 of which are pressure-sensitive deep click too.
OLED display, haptic feedback, on board memory and plenty of other good stuff.

I'll get one myself when I have the money.
It's on sale now, too...

That's a great spot, I'm totally willing to try that out, as soon as I have the money. they ship from New Zealand which is a tad dissapointing too

I've installed the gme again now, so, which verion is it that I want to be playing
tnx
Elite Dangerous: Horizons (2nd option from the top left) if you want to exclude any of the on foot stuff but still have an up to date game. Once you have your controls setup and have a little time in game you should be safe to swap back to the Odyssey version at any point you like without it triggering the on foot tutorials I think, you can swap between the two at anytime you like without consequence, I think the only thing it will do is put you in orbit if you logged out in a foot area in Odyssey and loaded into Horizons.

Elite Dangerous: Horizons
cool, I have the game running, what I have learnt so far:
1, if you don't like the name that you decided on, then you have to delete your saved game, then it will promp you to make a new character with a new name, doing this right away, seems to be the best way to name change name without getting in contact with support, and before getting really stuck into the game
2, lots of names are already taken, I settled on REDFOXTHREE, i'm happy with that since , redfox, redfoxone, and redfoxtwo were already taken, I quite like the look of REDFOXTHREE on the top right character picture
3, getting the tobii eye tracker 5 head tracking to work in game is a bit of a nightmare, it's meant to be automatically linked to the supported games that you have in steam already, but I just cannot get it working, maybe I have to complete the traning mission first? IDK, would have thought it would work in the station that you are docked in to start with, but no dice,
4, I'll get there
5, as long I keep trying,
6, and don't lose heart.

I think there is an option to enable the eye tracker. I think it was something under miscellaneous options

... Meanwhile...
.. I'm sat at the end of dinner and there is a knock on the back door, my flight stick has only been delivered 2 day early! get in !
Well I can fly alright now, a bit janky, my center recticle has dissapeared :-(!!, and as soon as it was plugged in, the tobii turned off, maybe it is time for a powered usb hub, lol.

The center reticule could for mouse control, which wont show up when using joystick and has been something of a bone of contention since launch, it could also be simply down to what you have equipped as different weapons and modules will have different reticules and such.

The tobii I suspect will be the same as TrackIR in that you need to make sure the settings are correct in the Tobii software before Elite will see it and once it does it will simply work, but that's only a guess as I've never used one.

there is surprisingly little in the way of settingto change in this regard, there is ' bind a key to turn head tracking on and off' but it doesnt work, from what I can see online is that if it comes up as an installed compatible game in the games list then it should work

that's a double bummer about the recticle, that there isn't one with hotas, and worse that the community has not been listened to /sadface.

Plug it into a different USB port, unless you have a really crap motherboard there will be at least two USB controllers on it so you should be able to share the load between them by moving stuff around, obviously depends on how many ports you have, specific motherboard, power draw of all devices etc etc but it may just be a case of messing around a little.

wow, this is infuriating, I tried a powered usb hub today, as recommened by tobii, but that didn't work, and now I can't get the sodding thing to work again, no matter which port it is plugged into, nor what is plugged into any of the ports!

scrap that, it is working now at the last of the day before bed, just had to set it up again in the software that I uninstalled then reinstalled again(again)
I'll go to bed happy now, and see if i can get the head tracking working tomorrow :-D

S imagine the scene, I'm desperately trying to complete the begining tutorial, which means flying through a course of rings,
I'm terrible at flying this little ship with the flight stick, and I have zero sense of what way is forward, all I have to go on is by using part of the front windscreen, where part of the frame intersects with it,
I'm starting to do okay, and have made it through the first 3 rings
the 4th ring is more challenging the the previous ring, and I'm desperately trying to line my head up with the windscreen/frame, but it doesn't matter how I look, it keeps moving out of my vision, then the penny drops, wtf, the head tracking is working!
Didn't help me at all, I'd lost my chance to complete the course, and move onto the next part,
Tomorrow I will map a key to stop the headtracking, for the times when head tracking is just going to get in the way of whatever I'm doing, must say that it did feel very immersive though, esp leaning forward to look at the dashboard, radar, etc

It's very immersive until you try VR :D

I've got VR, it was an expensive treat for when I got out of the care home for my first xmas after the stroke
waste though, because being tethered, and using a wheelchair just doesen't mix, since I started having siezures too, the headset turned out to be pretty claustrophic, and triggering, luckily I managed to get the headset off before a siezure would begin, but if I did not manage too, that could pull my PC off the desk, tbh, all that I could play was one handed chess too, you really need to be able to use both hands, stupid of me really!
