Thinking about new car, ask on a Computer forum of course....

Those Mazda CX-7s are really underrated. The 2.3T goes really well, is well equipped, drives well, and looks quite funky. Rare though because when they came out they didn't have a diesel option.
You can't have it with an auto box either so if that's a requirement (didn't see it listed) might not suit.

Gearbox doesn't bother me either will be fine.

There's a couple ner me I'll have a look at

And a few ML's (even a 55 version?)

If you have £5k I would not be looking at ML Mercs. The scope for massive bills is huge and if you only have £5k, that says to me that you won't be able to stomach say £1k if you need a couple of shocks for example.

Chjeers Cheif and Riolet.

Interms of expense for running the car - parts etc, I've been spoilt abuit by the current one as it's been so cheap and easy to run.

I'd just like something bigger, bit more road presence and as I don't do long commutes etc currently something that fits my needs.

Daftly a ML 430 v8 or 500 v8 seem's to do so and there a semi cheap but reasonabley equipped truck.

Test drove the CX7 and the ML yesterday

CX7 I was shocked at how small it was behind the wheel :(

The ML though was fantastic - very Road land yacht ish. Felt very safe, the 430 which I drove wafted along very well and never felt like it was stressed (Though for a V8 it did seem a little muted engine tone wise......)

I think SUV is the way forward though - it felt just more 'me' if that makes sense?

A few more options along this road then:

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201604042612569 - Nissan Murano 3.5 V6 - probably doesn't have the image, but should be reliable and cheap to fix

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201604102818989 - Volvo XC90 - probably looks and feels older than it actually is, think people have said Geartronic isn't great, but it's a Volvo so should be reliable and still a premium option.

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201602050746578 - Lexus RX 300 3.0 - Japanese reliability and decent level of comfort.

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201601180190029 - Volkswagen Touareg 3.2 V6.

Don't necessarily discount the ML if you like it and find it comfortable, but as others have said being a premium brand they have the potential for premium bills. If you can get one at the right price and keep some money aside for potential problems, then still could be the right choice.

Cheers Arm

I'll have a look at those tonight at home and see what is nearby to take out for a drive.

The ML when I have looked into it - it seem's the cdi has issues noted but the petrol ones I can't seem to find much, though they were the lesser in sales figures.

Suspension for the ML430 is £500 all in for new parts but not OEM, which I think at this age and price isn't a massive consideration? Some part's like all cars are expensive - though the ML I looked at was pre 2001 so was just £290 road fund licene - not that this bothers me though

Has a very weak CVT gearbox that likes to grenade. In the US Nissan had to extend the warranty on it to 10 years / 120,000 miles due to the number of failures.
Nissan UK will not honor it though and you're on your own if it dies. No one seems to want to rebuild them either.

I researched these extensively due to them looking to be a good choice as a family SUV.

Scratch that one then :(

Hence why you should never believe the "X Manufacturer's (or Country's) cars are always reliable" :)

I'll admit I didn't do any more than looking on Autotrader for Petrol SUV's that were 200bhp or more - but unless you throw options out there, you never know.

Skoda Yeti. Faster than a "Ferrari"

Despite not meeting any of the Op's criteria of:
- costing between £4k and £5k
- having ~200bhp (or being reasonably quick)
- having a "high up" driving position
- having a decent amount of room between the steering wheel.

I think he is referring to the Yeti over on briskskoda that has the tuned TTRS lump in it. If I remember rightly it was running somewhere between 500 and 700 bhp and the guy bought a brand new ttrs just to rip the engine out and put it in a yeti.

I am sure his name was bossFox and think that this is the thread:

There is a video of the yeti leaving an atom standing as well here:

Front shocks are about £160 pair and the rears are about £240 a pair.

I found the same as above when I was hunting at parts cost aswell.

Sat in a Lexus last night, same issue for me as the CX7, I didn't feel like I had enough space - lovely car, and lots of toys but to small

517HP that Yeti apparently. :)

Seems the guy also wants to make a 1.8 TFSI AWD Skoda Citigo (VW UP)

In that thread it looks like he is currently rebuilding it for more power. Either way the car and the guy that owns it are absolute bonkers, I mean who buys a brand new ttrs from the factory just so they can rip it apart and put the engine, running gear, haldex etc into a Yeti... what a hero!

Also - Sorry OP I know this has kinda derailed things, good luck with the test drives and keep us updated :D
