THINKING OF BUYING A 3870 XT READ THIS

Just got the Gigabyte 3870 through the post this morning - the cooler is not what is seen pictures either, it too is a zalman non dual slot design and i'm a tad miffed

Could you take a photo of the card if possible plz? So Gibbo can update the website photos.. If they don't have proper heatsinks on the ram and regulators I won't bother and wait for price drop.

no memory, at all for graphics cards have EVER needed heatsinks, its one of those stupid "expected" things because some idiot company put them on to appear better. they are about as useful as go faster stripes. The only reason cards really have them now as as a way of spreading mounting pressure of heatsink and weight better and as the larger plate mounting would cover the memory as standard moving the heat isn't a bad idea.

the dual close cooler sucks, as blower fans are crap, be thankful companies are realising huge heatsinks with huge surface area with next to no airflow is almost entirely pointless.

the hdmi dongles should be separate but cheap and stocked at all stores that sell the cards incase you want one. remember 99.9999999999% of users will be running with a normal lcd which won't have speakers or you wouldn't want to use them, so the sound on same cable is useless for the massive, massive majority. better 1 million users save £2 on the dongle needlessly coming with every card, and the people that need it pay £2 extra for one don't ya think.

as for only having 1 dvi to vga, very few people have 1 crt anymore, even fewer have 2, new screens are predominately lcd's with dvi on most of them. again i don't want to pay that extra £1 for a needless adaptor. but companies that sell these cards, takes seconds to check new stock to check description is accurate, and if something doesn't come with them, get in stock of the extra's that people might want.

drunkenmaster, interesting points - but irrelevant to the issue at hand. The problem is OCUK not provided adequate product descriptions. There is no excuse for this.

ddr2 memory needed heatsinks sometimes but ddr3 doesnt ddr4 is even more low power, they stay cold whatever

crossfire isnt bog standard, quit whining. If you bought two cards then maybe your complaint would be credible. HDMI again, did you actually want to use that or just like cables for your drawer.

If you wanted a limited edition box set with a free tshirt and baseball cap to wear you bought the wrong pack obviously..

OEM

Do you think ocuk makes cards? Obviously its just an ATi reference design packed up for the masses at their best price. Maybe they should stick oem in there to make it obvious or you could just phone to confirm details I guess

What about the RESALE value?
Parts missing means the price must be lower.

Most cards I buy second hand are just the card and maybe 1 cable. I think most are more concerned with any warranty cover being left

Stuff like tshirts and all that other bunk included with top end cards doesnt really help with resale value.

How much power it uses, slots or space occupied, noise made, how well it overclocks or heat factors & a good manufacturer or warranty cover.
All that will add up to effect the price over another same spec model by maybe 20 or 30 pounds a year from now.

Surely those details should be provided on the site? Or do you think we should phone up OcUk with regards to every product we buy off their site to make sure that what we order is actually what is shown on the site?.....Sounds more like catalogue/phone ordering than ordering via the net.

The GIGABYTE card looks exaclty like the one in the picture they have up for the 3850 here :
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-033-GI&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=416

Don't know why the hell they haven't used that picture.. I just rang OC and asked them about it and said that the picture is simply for illustrative purposed and the single slot fan is basically as good as the dual slot...
Guy sounded a bit ****** off at the fact that I was asking about it and didnt leave me any option but to stick with it.

Poor imo :/

Well, I wouldn't call the zalman attached to the card a single slot cooler - its pretty big and stands proud of the card. It cools just as well if not better than the stock setup, just doesn't vent air out the back of the case.

Fitted a zalman VF900CU onto an ati 3870xt and it keep it very cool - a lot cooler than the x1900xt it used to be fitted to. :D

If it isn't the correct picture it would be better to have no picture. "Illustrative purposes" ? illustrating what ? What it could be ? What it isn't ? What it was ? What it will be in the future ? I'd like clarification as to what they mean by that phrase.

agreed.

very disappointed to see the box, 'extras' and design, all not as expected. I will need to swap out for the gigabyte, which should look the same as the pic and have the minimum extras, both of which i expect as per description!

now i expect i will have to pay postage, which will not bode well for future purchases where the description was woefully inaccurate!

good to see Gibbo will be updating the description to make it clear what your getting, shame those of us who were quick off the mark were just too quick and ended up getting burnt!

Someone already mentioned the gigabyte one isnt the one in the picture either and a quick look at the gigabyte website shows the same picture but says they have the right to change without notice!
