Thinking of changing from Sky to Plusnet.....

My dad had had an e-mail from Sky saying he has gone over his monthly usage twice in 6 months and are therefore moving him to the unlimited package (he currently uses the "lite" plan which is free and doesnt cost anything extra on top of his Sky subscription!)

Problem is this will cost him an extra £7.50 per month plus they are saying he has outlived a discount period he was in and this will cost an extra £5.00 too!!!!

Anyway, I'm doing some research for him and found Plusnet can be had for £6.75 per month with a 10GB limit which should be more than enough!

My question is, can we use the existing Sky router or is it hardwired for the Sky settings?

Any advice appreciated!

Thanks...

You can usually flash the Sky router with the proper firmware and set it up for another provider. Always a risk flashing of course and it does depend which router you have. eg. I flashed a DG384GT and it's fine.

To be honest the speed with Sky at the moment is pretty crap - with it being my dad, I dont think he'll be looking for mega-low pings!! :D

Just reliable and cheap is the order of the day!

Plusnet is terrible for xbox live
i had plusnet and speeds where terrible after 4 oclock
i would stay well clear

I moved over to Plusnet at the start of the year and you do definitely notice a difference after 4/5pm. They do pretty much state when you sign up that the connection is subject to traffic shaping during peak periods.

I've not had any problems playing Battlefield/CoD through steam though.

My dad has been with Plusnet before and always found them to be fine!

Speed isnt really an issue as much as reliability and price to be honest!

It depends on the PlusNet package type and the game in question. They have to create a profile for each game, another reason why traffic shaping sucks!

With Sky Talk you get a £5 per month discount? making the price £7.50 per month?

Yeah but their latest charges summary states that my dad is nearing the end of his "discount period" - rather than it being a constant discount for having the calls through Sky!?!?!

I'm sure when I speak to them they will offer to continue the discount but its still £7.50 extra which he'd rather not be paying!
The annoying part is that they are saying his usage has jumped to over the 2GB limit for 2 months running despite him barely using it!?!?!

I mean barely using it! - He perhaps gets a couple of e-mails per day and other than that just the odd bit of browsing - nothing too usage-heavy like i-player or youtube etc!

I dont think he's ever downloaded a song or video!

What I'm trying to say is that his usage pattern hasnt changed from the last couple of years and he's never even come close to the limit before!

That's nice of them to allow you to keep your router, because every broadband provider I've had has always asked for their router back.

Which I don't really mind, better they take it back, refurbish it and send it to another user, because I wouldn't bother uses these cheap routers. very bad performance with gaming.

You get what you pay for when you go for these cheap deals, pay more with plusnet and you can go on a pro package where gaming traffic is prioritised, go cheap and suffer. Read through their website, they're very open about it which I respect them for, if anything comes as a surprise when you'r on Plusnet then it's your own fault for not reading what's provided. There'splenty of ISP's who aren't nearly as open and transparent.
Having said that I moved from Plusnet to Sky because I wanted a purely unlimited package, something Plusnet weren't offering. Never had a problem really with either ISP.

That certainly shouldn't be the case. I've no problems with XBL/online gaming, and if there was a service-wide problem then I'd expect our forums to be rife with complaints and our support centre to be getting inundated?

if anybody is still with us and is experiencing problems like this then I'm happy to take a look into it if they get in touch?

@StevieP, if you've any questions about our service that you'd like me to answer then give me a nudge.

Best rgds,
