Last july i deciced to give up with BE* (unlimited) and go with sky broadband because i decided to order the full tv package from them but i was more than happy with BE getting around 8mb download spead , the reason i changed was because sky max was nearly half the price and i thought id put the saving towards sky sports package lol , anyway was after i changed to sky i was getting around 6.5 to 7mb so i was happy as i was getting nearly the same speed for half the price

fast forward to december and we moved house, after informing sky we waited for the broadband to be set up at the new house, to cut a long story short we had to wait a month because of their cockups, we got activated this wednesday gone and we are getting 4mb absolute max :(

Im really annoyed at this and for a very good reason , the thing is weve moved CLOSER to the exchange and we now live in a LESS populated area ? so obviously we expected higher speeds, so we must have a duff line or sky is playing silly buggers, anyway ive been thinking of going back to BE

I wanted to know if i would see a major increase over my current 4mb if i subscribed to their unlimited or pro package ? on their site is estimates around 11mb but i'll take that with a pinch of salt

what do you guys reckon ?

Post your line stats (attenuation/SNR).

The chances are that you've got a duff line. Being closer to the exchange does not always equal having a shorter line - I've experienced this myself and I also wasn't immensely pleased. Due to that though, chances are that you're stuck with your 4mbit.

Also, I presume you've tried using the test socket to eliminate household wiring?

I think these are the stats u need , if theres anything else u need to know let me know

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4093 kbps 765 kbps
Line Attenuation 46 db 27 db
Noise Margin 14 db 10 db

ive tried the test socket and it made no difference but i'll look intio this ringwire thing :)

ok ive just looked at this ring wire site then examined my Bt phone socket, i have the socked that can be unscrewed half way down, i have a micro filter plugged direct into the phone socked, with my phone pluged into the micro filter and my dsl line plugged from the router to the filter , (basically example 1 as shown)

now ive took the face plate off to check my wires and noticed that NO wires are connected to the faceplate , yes i see the slot numbered 2 3 4 5 but no wires are connected to them, as for the wires them selves there are two spare ones not connected to anything one is green and one is black, could it be as simple as reconnecting these to the face plate ? if so which one goes where ?

So i take it you dont have any extensions in the house? The green/black are spares to the pole if you wanted a second line into the house.

ive restarted the router a few times and its not changed

I did forget to add that originally i was synced at around 6mb but i asked sky to turn down my max delay settings as i was getting high pings on games, after they did that i was stuck on 4mb, its seems like a big hit on my DL speeds just to reduce my ping by 25ms or so :(

Bear in mind that not everyones lines will operate at the same rate with such settings. My SNR margin used to be 7dB and my connection was really unstable, kept disconnecting all the time. My ISP then pushed it up to 14dB and it has been fine ever since.

The OP really needs to go back to his ISP and kickup a fuss.

i'll get back on to them but they suggest leaving it for 10 days to "burn" in so to speak from date of first connection, so i'll leave it till then

Bit of an update on this, its been 10 days now and im still getting 4mb, ive talked to sky then my neighbour this morning

first off sky said blah blah yes the best you can get on your line is 4.5mb , then i pointed out that on my first day of being connected is was synced at 6mb and its only gone down to 4mb after i phoned tier 3 and asked them to reduce my max delay because of high pings to servers , her reply ? "blah blah yes the best you can get on your line is 4.5mb" i swear to god sky support is the worst ive ever used

to top things off i went to my neighbour asking about his ISP and he too is on sky max, and his speeds well he reckoned he gets the full 16mb which i'll take with a pinch of salt but he did say he can download at between 900 and 1000kbps which is over DOUBLE of what i can :(

i hate sky and i really want to moved back to BE, but theres no guarantee that i'll get any more speed from them is there ? :(

There's no guarantee it would be better with BE, it could even be worse depending on how good there equipment is at dealing with noise.

As for Sky saying all the line is only capable of 4.5meg could be correct but all they do is check the line or data base and tell you what you all ready Know.

Dealing with Sky can be painfull suggest improve it or I'm off. Perhaps you should give it a go with o2 - buy an HD satellite receiver and probably in with a chance of watching some football et al for free! Don't forget click thru quidco and there is usually a bungback
