Thinking of getting a blu ray player...

I hate to butt in but from reading this thread I am thinking of getting a ps3 purely for bluray. I have been thinking for a while now to go out and get a blu ray player basically because I want HD films (looks like it will win over the market) but also because I use my 360 for dvd's and it upscales awfully.
The big question that has arisen now is how does the PS3 upscale DVD's as opposed to say a blu ray player? As a bluray player is dedicated for that one purpose...

Also how would a PS3 compare to a blu ray player? As again a blu ray player is dedicated to perform only one task...

My ps3 is as good an upscaler as my old Samsung HD850 dvd player, admittedly I havent watched that many dvd's on my ps3, but those I have watched are just fine

The PS3 is recognisably the best br player available (imo not even taking account of the price) - firmware is regulrarly being updated to cope with newer discs, you really cant buy a better unit

Buy a decent hdmi cable and preferably a remote and you are away

Interesting article on why you shouldn't buy a Blu-Ray player... yet...

I might wait a few months.

ok, thats trash. points 1 & 4 dont affect the ps3 at all. point 2 - bluray is best on a big screen. well thats a given. i cant see why thats a reason to dismiss it. you're doing something wrong if you cant tell the difference. point 3 - small number of blurays available. even 450 is enough to keep you happy for a fair while. there's still loads of films id like to see on bluray that are already available.

I've heard that it doesn't properly reproduce Dolby Digital and DTS formats. Is that true?

thats wrong too. standard DD and DTS and fine. Dolby true:HD is supported. the ps3 cant output the bitstream, but it can decode it onboard and output full 7.1 uncompressed PCM. DTS: master audio is the only one it doesnt support right now, only being able the decode the 1.5mb/sec 'core' of the audio stream.

Cool so this thing about buying a player now and not being able to watch bonus features on newer discs wont apply on the ps3? Also I have no idea on pricing, are they available cheaper than a blu ray player? Ive seen the players for £200

Are you having a laugh ?

Is he having a laugh?

The PS3 will be updated to work with all current and future blu-ray films. All the bonus features will work fine on the PS3 in the future.

To be honest, pointless going for any other Blu-Ray player. The ones you find for £200 are only profile 1.0 and will be obsolete in the future, for an extra £70-80 you can get the PS3 which is guaranteed to work with new releases and is brilliant at upscaling SD DVD's :)

You have convinced me... But I have no money that my next problem, can you help?

I thought there was something like this going on. Looks like my Onkyo purchase is now on hold until the PS3 supports everything

Obsolete - No.
They won't enable you to use some of the newer features on Profile 2 disks - however if online content etc is of no interest to you then Profile 1.1 and even Profile 1 players will happily continue to play all of your Blu Ray titles.

lol dont be silly, there's no point in waiting for something like that. ive had my tx-sr805 for 6 months already and it is a phenomenal amp. dont let the fact that the ps3 cant handle dts:ma put you off, because its a minor concern when it does everything else.

Yeah but I already have a decent amp that does DDS / DTS. I'll be spending £400 just for UPCM & DDHD.

Is there any glimmer of hope for DTS MA handling for the PS3 in a future update ?.

so what happens when dts:ma is fully supported? you'll be spending £400 just to play a dta ma audio track? you'll be lucky if you hear any difference at all between that and an lpc track. if thats the reason you're upgrading then i have to say dont bother upgrading at all:)

dts:ma support, well. we've been waiting over a year already. no signs when it'll appear if at all:)

Thats not quite correct. I'll be paying £400 to support all blu-ray based high def audio formats not just DTS MA.

which is a waste of time, as i said. HD audio formats are all groovy and everything, but if you're thinking of something like a 605 purely for the HD audio support then i cant recommend it. people find it hard or next to impossible to tell the difference between the lpcm tracks and the compressed variants on the disc (TrueHD and dt:ma) unless its obvious that its been mixed from a different source. the reason you buy any amp is that it should do everything better than the one you've got, not just for hd audio support.its a bit of a pointless endeavor because somebody will come a long with a better amp and it'll put in a better performance with regular DTS than a cheaper amp would with dts:ma.

much like my 805 does next to a 605. for hd audio, i wouldnt recommend anything less than an 805 and another £800 worth of speakers at least.

The one thing i will say is that LPCM has changed the quality of game audio dramatically. oh, and hdmi switching is great.
