Thinking of getting a blu ray player...

if it means you are buying an entry level amp to do it, yes. youd be much better off buying a 2nd hand flagship amp for peanuts than you would something like a 605, assuming you dont need the hdmi switching. what amp do you have now, anyway?

It's a Sony STR-DB940 which is mid range - well it was at the time I bought it 8 years ago anyway !!.

Still not worth it ?.

A cracking amp for DD/DTS in its day (one of those lasted me four or five years from new) but personally it doesnt cut the mustard now

edit - I would concur with james, save up a little longer for the 805, the 605 just isnt worth it

Obsolete - No.
They won't enable you to use some of the newer features on Profile 2 disks - however if online content etc is of no interest to you then Profile 1.1 and even Profile 1 players will happily continue to play all of your Blu Ray titles.

Yea i guess, but it would be stupid of someone to buy a £200-£300 bluray player when the PS3 is around £270 and is completely future-proof. Just imo.

Blimey, the 805 is double the price of the 605

For me the 805 offers no functionality benefits over 605 - so is the potential sound improvement over the 605 worth another £400 ?.

I'll also only be using it in a 5.1 config.

its a massive step up in terms of audio quality, power handling, functionality ect. i just cant recommend you buying one if all you want is hd audio support. when i bough mine i bought it because it did more of everything (over my yamaha rx-v630) and did it all so much better. more connectivity, hdmi switching, vastly better audio capabilities and processing (THX of course), capable of biamping the front speakers.

it's just in a different league and hdmi is great. its in a different league to the 605 as well. if you want to know why the 805 is worth of its price tag over the 605, start with the weight of the unit. its twice as heavy at 23.3kg. thats a good indication right there.

however, again, if you are upgrading for audio and nothing else, i just cant recommend buying one. its a real waste buying a unit that can do so much if you are only interested in the audio. go and get a demo of a few amps if you can, that'll help you decided on what to get. and ask on av forums about 2nd hand avamps as well. they may well find a few bargains for you.

Oh I agree - but then saying that I too am currently after a Bluray player but I don't particularly want a PS3.
The only way prices of Bluray can go is down - I think its March/April when the Profile 2 players start making an appearance which should drop the Profile 1 & 1.1 players into bargain basement territory.
Then give it another 5-6 months after the 2.0 release and those too should be extremely affordable.

I know we're only at the beginning of 2008, I personally feel that by the end of the year Profile 2 Blueray players are going to be extremely affordable.

Yea i know what you mean. I dont really want a PS3 either since i have a 360 and a Wii, but it looks like the best option for me. I won't be playing games on it, only MGS4 maybe, but its only for upscaling SD DVD's and Blu-Ray. May install Linux on it too.

Another problem is that blu ray players are going to go down in price rapidly (as they already are) but the PS3 wont because its a games console... So I really dont know whether to wait - will there be more of these "profiles" after 2.0?

We can only hope that after the "fiasco" of Profile 1 & 1.1 drives not being updateable to profile 2 that the lesson has been learnt and that all profile 2 drives will be fully updateable - a la PS3.

The thing is as soon as Bluray was released there was "rumour" of Profile 1.1 in the future.
Then once again, as soon as Profile 1.1 hits people knew 2.0 would happen and there was a good chance of no upgrade possible.
If it wasn't for that I honestly think the Bluray Vs HD-DVD war could have been effectively won some time ago.
However people held back on Bluray purchases and even now as this thread shows people are reluctant to take the plunge.

That Profile 2 players will be fully upgradeable to any major new revisions in the future.

So in short, moving from standard DD / DTS on Sony STRDB940 to DDHD & DTSMA on a Onkyo 605 is not a good enough leap to justify £400 - please confirm.

Yea i hope that the standalones are upgradeable. However, is it not because that the hardware the PS3 has is more along the lines of a PC rather than a console? If the profile 2.0 blu-ray players are going to be upgradeable, then will they not cost a bomb since their hardware will need to be like that of a PC like the PS3? Just shooting ideas out here, nothing factual :)

I'm not going to pretend that I know how these things fully work.
However I would have thought that both the PS3 and stand-alone players shared a lot of components when it came to the actual Bluray player.

On the PS3 you are updating software so that it can read profile 2 - there really is no reason why stand-alone players couldn't have had that ability too.
It can only be a software update - to get your PS3 to profile 2 all you'll need to do is run some program, its not as if new hardware is required.
So stand-alone players should have the same ability - I can only assume that cost meant that no mechanism for upgrading the software was built into the stand-alone players.

You have to consider that in general *** PS3 had to have a lot of hardware as a games machine, that strictly wasnt necessary for a disc player, so just because the PS3 is capable of doing something it would make it very expensive for stand-alone manufacturers to produce a machine that could do the same things. It was a huge benefit to Sony to have a full machine out there practically first especially with undefined profiles from the BDA to come

One of the main differences was a specific amount of RAM - which of course the PS3 had to have anyway, but few disc players would require

Dont blu ray players have dedicated chips just for playing blu ray content though? The PS3 is a games console... the player only does one thing

Well, I did it. Broke down and bought my first gaming console since the Atari 2600 25years ago. And I am totally loving it! Not only is Blu-ray movie quality incredible (and very noticable on a 65" DLP) but the bundled game Ratchet & Clank has been really fun as well.

Thanks for all the advise, guys. Now if only I could get the WiFi connection working.
