best bet is always gonna be to get what your friends/people you'll wanna play with have.
i got a 360 as thats what my friends have, i wouldnt buy a ps3 now, as it doesnt seem worth having both, but if i was starting again and most people had one, i'd go for it.

You're pretty much bang on aside from the part about owning both, I feel having both is actually a great thing if you can afford it. Each has shed loads of titles not available to the other that you usually seem to overlook/miss if you don't own the console they're released on (i say this as i'm guilty of it)

I own a PS3, however, if you're not interested in blu ray, I would suggest a 360.
neither console's exclusives have that much appeal to me, and i'd feel a bit weird sepdning £300 odd to play little big planet. this is the one generation of consoles ive not gone and bought them all.

Get a Dreamcast. It solves all the Xbox vs PS3 problems.
On a serious note, if you want more than a games console get the PS3 (i.e media, bluray etc), if you want a console you can play against your mates with, it's hard to ignore the 360.
