Thinking of switching from Intel to AMD

Think i might buy my son a new upgrade for xmas for his i5

now lets see what to get

FX 8320 ofc cant afford the i7 and the extra little performance aint worth the extra notes

but its worth the extra £60-80 it will cost me upgrading that i5

When Piledriver was first touted, it went upto 10 cores.
I remember the slides distinctly.

Maybe, just very maybe AMD will bring it out.

But I doubt it, it'd be a multi-threaded monster though.

I think at best it'll be a refinement release that can guarantee 5GHz base at lower power use. The current 8350s are overclocking much higher than they used to, some are reaching 5GHz at relatively low volts.

I remember you saying about AMD mentioning successor chips to Vishera on AM3+, if they do anything, it has to be a 10 core.

Chances are it'll be nothing and AMD in another lie shocker, then again, I don't ever recall the quote except from you, so you're the liar* :p

In jest*

You must have dreamt that as I've definitely never said it :)

I'll find the quote.

I have very good memory.

It was along the lines of AMD releasing something else on AM3+, I suggest that they have, the FX9, you stated that you felt it'd be more than that.

I've said that I thought they'd release something more than the 9590 for AM3+ because AMD had said there'd be another CPU 'after Vishera', and the 9590 is Vishera. I'd love to see 10-16 core desktop CPUs, but I don't think there's any real demand for it.

I don't ever recall seeing AMD state anything though, that's what I'm saying. And I've just proven my capability at being able to remember stuff.

I called no SR for AM3+ in Feb (Obviously, based on nothing but assumption and conjecture) there's a reason I appear AMD negative, because there's so much ignorance surrounding AMD, but then there's tons of times I'll call out Intel owners with something else just as ignorant.

I'd rather AM3+ was killed off, but not for nothing to get released in the meantime.

I do like Piledriver, it reminds me of Phenom II. Tons of us had Phenom II's for the price/performance, now a lot are doing that with Piledriver, which is fine, but I don't recall anywhere near the same levels of ignorance.

You misunderstood.

That part was me. If they do anything (significant), it'll be 10 cores, but that's me literally just throwing my arms in the air.
As Piledriver was originally touted for 10 cores, I was hoping that perhaps they'd bring it out in the meantime. They probably won't and don't have any plans to do so however.

It was you, however saying AMD's stated that they're bringing out a CPU after the Piledrivers. What I said, if they do anything (significant) with AM3+ it has to be 10 cores. But they very likely won't do that. It's like how AMD managed to eek 6 cores into their AM3, as they had nothing until Bulldozer from Deneb.

And those reports don't mean sod all really.

Perhaps.

But I've only just this minute surmised about 10 core CPU's :p

But I believe that was under another code name, it really was a while ago.

It won't happen, it's just fun to speculate.

Which i5 is he using?

If it is a 2500k or newer I wouldn't bother.
