Thinking of switching from Intel to AMD

M8 don't listen to all these 4-8 thread losers, come to X79 and get a 12 thread i7! we gots quad memory channels an loadz o PCI-E slots plus some boards support 16 thread Xeons if u dont's like your overclocki'n. Dis where the party @ don't be listening to all these mainstream muppets!

Extreme 4 lyf YOLO!

I think the point from this gentleman is that it's your money, and everyone is keen to tell you how to spend it.. and if they made the mistake of purchasing something earlier, they will try to justify their purchase by making you buy the same, even if the logic is faulty.

This is not aimed at any particular person, especially the one above :P

But seriously. If you don't need the performance right now (getting stuttering in game x or low FPS), DO NOT UPGRADE TO ANYTHING. It will be cheaper in a few months, except for maybe memory. Everything else will be tens, or hundreds less.

It's your money, don't waste it.

And yet an overclocked Haswell system running a couple of GPU's will still post higher results.....

I am 'upgrading' from my current system, 2500K\xfire 7950 etc see sig, to the FX8320 because I cannot afford Intels extortionate prices, ie to save the expense of a new board the 'best' I7 cpu I can get new(I will not buy 2nd hand, too risky) is the 3770K @ £240 which will run in my P67A board. My board and 2500K are knocking on 2.5yrs and whilst they still perform ok I'm looking for some future proofing and as I purchased the FX8320 + AM3+ board brand new with guarantees for £197, it seemed a bit of a no brainer to me. That setup will give me all the performance I will need for the next 2\3 years and any 'extra' performance from mantle or whatever will be a bonus. I do not wish to indulge at all in the Intel\Amd bashing, I will do some benches with some games I have with the 2500K and the FX8320 with my xfire 7950 and will be interested in the results. For the record I have no allegiance to Intel or Amd and usually buy the best 'new' gear I can afford, this time it is Amd, last time it was Intel. At OP, buy the best cpu etc you can afford mate and please don't be put off by fanboys from either camp, I am perfectly happy to switch from Intel to Amd and will not lose any sleep over it. :)

Ps: I intend to sell my 2500K\Msi P67A-GD65\ 8Gb Gskill 1600Mhz\ CM Hyper 212+ etc which I expect will recoup most if not all of my outlay.

You can get brand spanking new 2600k's for £180'ish

So if you sell your 2500k you'll be looking at a cheap upgrade.

Well I have not seen a 2600K at that price 'new' but it would still leave me with £80 to find which I don't have! That's my point by the way, Intel i7 2600K @ £180, how old is that cpu, still an able performer I know but £180....
couldn't do it mate, not got the money anyway. FX8320 £115.... do me fine. :)

Can you run your i5 2500K faster?
It's pretty lowly clocked.

Say, 4.6GHZ, as this information could be useful for other people, at 4.2GHZ, it's going to negatively effect the performance with a 7950 Crossfire.

I'd want 4.8GHZ minimum if I was running a 7950 Crossfire.

I sold my 2500k for £120 so it wasn't that much of an extra cost.... 2600k clocks higher too!!

And yes it's still an able performer, still more able then anything then AMD currently offer, that's why I made the move to it instead of selling up and moving back to AMD.

I run benches on the Crysis benchmark and my 2500k slaughter the FX CPU it was put up against...

Have to admit I'm not really into overclocking, that 4.2 was really easy to do and I had ran the chip at stock until about a month ago when I got another 7950 for xfire and realised I'd have to clock it up a bit, I don't know what its capable of as I've only changed the multiplier. :D

I can understand wanting to buy something new, but I'm a no compromises kind of guy, I too have looked at the fx83, but I can't handle the inconsistent performance.

In the end, a cheap upgrade to a 4670k while pointless was enough to curb it.
Don't get me started on my 290 lo'.

Ha, fair enough.
What exactly are you expecting from the fx83 switch?
