This Business and Moment...

How do you go about negotiating salaries? They've come back with an offer £5k less than I would like after grading me against current peers. Do I ask for something in between? It's still a great package to be fair.

Why not ask for £5k more? Or have you already done that?

Offer letter finally came in, getting it signed today and handing my notice tomorrow!
What a day. Couldn't sleep last night overthinking what I was going to say. Then took me a good 40mins to get the courage to speak with manager privately.
I managed to squeeze a week off in between end date and new start date so I'm happy with that. Manager/HR were all very sad to hear the news and tried their best to keep me on.
It only took two years but I'm finally leaving my comfort zone and trying something new elsewhere.

Well done. I absolutely hate that moment where you have to break the news.

Probably why i stayed in my first job for 8 years!

Manager/HR were all very sad to hear the news and tried their best to keep me on.

Did they do that with anything tangible like matching the offer with a pay rise etc.. or was it just words/promises about career development and how you're valued etc..?

Just asked if there was anything they can do to keep me on. I was just upfront and said it's mainly a career change as it's a role not available in the company(and I didn't see them creating this particular role).

Congratulations, couldn't wait to hand in my notice at my last job.

Was on holiday in Tenerife knowing the Monday I was returning to work I be handing it in. I did give one of the bosses a prewarning before I went on holiday.

Was they sad to see me go.....nope, did they try to keep me.....nope.

All they saw it as an cost saving.

Then (given it is the first figure you've had from them) I think it is fair to go back and reiterate the figure you were looking for (obviously doing so in a professional way - thanking them for their offer and conveying your keenness to start working with them etc..etc..)

It is standard to have a bit extra available to offer a candidate and they're grown ups (or at least you hope they are) so won't be offended over a salary negotiation if they really can't match your request then let them come back with the suggestion of a bit extra that comes part way to meeting it, no need to low ball yourself in case they do come back and match it.

If they do come back and either can't go any higher or can only partially match it then (at least in the latter case) it seems you'd still be willing to accept, in which case try to get something else out of them - agree to the offer and thank them again, then say try to get an agreement to have your pay reviewed after 6 months (if that is the length of your probationary period) etc.. Is there a bonus scheme/variable component - if not mentioned then you could ask about the possibility of the additional amount you're after (and possibly more) being paid as an annual bonus subject to your performance etc.. Alternatively if there are request for stuff that is non standard to that workplace - things like flexible working that would be valuable to you (childcare/young family say) then this could be a good time to get some agreement, they've got your agreement to the offer, they're just about to get you over the line... something trivial like allowing the new hire with a toddler or baby to work from home one day a week etc.. if it isn't standard is a non-brainer (perhaps only kicks in after probation but meh...) and (if non standard for that work place) easier to get agreed to as part of coming on board than as a request/favour once you're already an employee.

Anyway the above might be completely useless, depends on the firm/hiring manager, HR etc.. but best of luck and I hope you do get the full amount or as close to it as you can. :) I don't personally see any harm in pushing for it, in the general case that is a big part of what differentiates the people earning higher amounts for the same job (obviously assuming some basic level of competence).

Well that was a nice break. First time in ages I went and had a real holiday. No emails or anything. Well, maybe replied to one thing in 8 days.

Now back to the grind and trying to a. catch up and b. smash some deadlines out.

So much crap going on at the moment, I really think work is the best place to lose myself.

While I was away though, I managed to chat to a load of waiters/resses about Cheezus, which was cool. A lot of interest which was even funnier. Also while I was away, the guy did the android front end side of things, so I downloaded the apk and off I went!
Yes, nothing is hooked up to the backend but all controls are there. He's built out all the tensorflow data modelling, so now it's hooking it all up together. First stop is cheese capture and recognition and info back. Then on from there.

SaveNode doing my nut in with developers. After they messed up so much, they came and nearly delivered what we asked for... although the creation of the SNO wallet errors and says failed ha and the ETH wallet is missing, which was there before and the manage wallets function seems to have vanished. Slowly getting there though for the first step. Kinda. I want this first bit out in the next 2 weeks or I'll lose my ****.

VolAir is going OK, but we hit a point where we realised the developer was blocked because of internal decisions. Essentially, it's when a user books a trip and how we send that data from the app to backend and back, and what that data is, and where it lives. Most of it is smart contract, but we don't need it all blockchain based. They're building a couple of APIs to handle it and it should be done this week and then it'll all coming together.

I started exploring our other partners within the luxury travel space and spoke with Soneva private island resorts today, they're interested in being a tier 2 partner, where they pay us 10% commission for each customer we send their way. Trying to hit some great partners so we have a network across all verticals of the sector.

Did a mockup for the member offerings page:

At the same time, we're due to update our whole site and going to get someone in the team to do it so thought I'd put it together...

Done a bit more now, but you get the start of it anyway... will try and get as much as possible finished by tomorrow so they can get started on it.

I've been offered a unique experience for our customers to attend the Monaco Yacht Show in Sept as well, it's a full VIP 4 day event with private jet flight there, 5 star accommodation and VIP events all week... I just have to sell this to about 6 people at 12.5-15k a person :p No biggie.

Oh, and there is a huge reorganisation at work, which will mean my job goes. I won't have it soon. So, pressure on getting some **** to work, but at the same time I'm a gambling man, but I also like to play my odds. They're moving to a product line based org structure, which is great for me as I'm essentially a product manager outside of my contract. Luckily a very good friend of mine has been made the Exec Dir or Engineering, and doing a lot of the work on the restructure. I'm hoping to get involved a lot on the Basel side. Play the visibility card, get seen and grab the product line manager role I want! Or just lose my job haha

Is it wrong to accept a job knowing it's your fall back plan and you're waiting on better offers that you'll accept if they came through?

I accepted a new contract role yesterday, a lot more money but it's in a fair distance away which means staying over a few days during the week. Alternatively, there's hopefully an offer from another contract role which is basically next door to where I am now which is the one I will go for.

Is that wrong? I just worry that if you say "sorry I'm waiting on other offers" they'll change their mind or hold it against you, but on the flip side, I'm basically going to burn a bridge with the recruiter who got me the far away job when I turn round and tell him actually I won't be working their as I've accepted a better offer

Could potentially be an issue in future if you were in contact with that recruiter, but at the end of the day you have to do what's best for you.

How long until you know about the other role that's closer to home?

Should find out today. Had both interviews yesterday, straight after one another and one got back almost immediately, the other has to get sign off from the director, who wasn't there yesterday so should hear any time now

Try and bide your time then mate :)

Yeah i think i'd just try and drag it out. 24hrs from interview isn't long to be sure you're making the right decision. Could even probably get away with delaying till Monday.

Although surely the second should've already got authorisation for the project/spend prior to the interview? Although i'm not too sure how contracting hires work!

They’ve got budget they just need sign off on me as normally the director is involved in the interview process. Luckily it was a recorded telephone interview so I don’t have to have a second stage

I remember reading here that when they were recruiting and the applicant didn't make a decision in 24hours that they would move on/offer to the next one.

Right folks, I've signed the contract and agreed a start date but nowhere in the process was I ever asked about planned holidays. What's the best way to bring this up as we have a trip planned from 19th Dec to 3rd January? My pro-rata annual leave just about covers this length.

That's a while away @Jony27 so I wouldn't worry too much. Is this through a recruiter? If so I would contact them and mention it now, don't see it being a problem though.
