A related question: (inspired by the movie Interstellar (dad Cooper and Murph).
A large group has a lot of work to do, that is not optional in fact - they will go down, backward and broke if they don't.
Now, their boss or leader has sent word (that every member of the group accepts) that he will be too late to do any of the very many practical things that must be done, before he can get there. None of them, including their absentee leader can afford to fail.
Q. Whose duty is it to do the work so the group don't fail?
A. The absentee leader?, or
B. The group members?
Related - duty of care question:
What moral, legal, ethical or practical right (if any) have the members of the above group to protect themselves from those who aim to interfere with, block, frustrate, slander, steal from, claim superiority over, prevent, take all credit for their past and present good work to achieve their constructive goal, and prevent or deny them from aquiring the needed cooperation effort, services and skills of those who in fact possess the missing necessary skills, of good work ethic, practical intelligence and resource supplies that are essential to the success of the group and its leaders' goal, but are not possessed, known, or competently practicable in time by either the group or its to known-to-be late-arriving leader?
^ the above is for Australian logic students who want to / need to pass the pub test.
In answering the above question, assume that there is a secure environment where the laws of property, honesty, accuracy, and merit are observed and policed. Ie. That there are real consequences for slander, tort, defamation, theft of real and intellectual property, etc and honest judges.
Extra points will be given for briefly addressing the wider implied question:
How might the outcome differ (ie. the group and its leaders shared constructive goal), be aided or supported, were the question or challenges faced by the group to be presented for decision in the court of public opinion?
Make the reasonable assumption that the group and its leader enjoy a fair modicum of earned positive respect and good will for their past and present persistent efforts and constructive goal in the wider public community of non-members.
Tip: You may consider the above group case to be a work group, company or business, charity group, professional group, or any other constructive goal group of your choosing. One is sufficient.
If no groups come easily to mind, consider the group to be a family (eg. yours), with the to-be-late leader being one of your parents who has announced they are running late for a preannounced important celebration event being uniquely run by all of your family members for yourselves and others benefit (that you've done nothing like before), and you and your siblings (if any) and your other parent to be the work group genuinely committed to the same shared positive goal announced by your absent parent (the big family event leader)
Assume potential external helpers have financial expertise to provide your family (group) with the means to lawfully acquire and pay for the use of any more-experienced specialised external support, supply and advisory services on agreeably easily affordable terms without your family or parent incurring disabling debt, embarassment, risk of event-takeover, loss of face or actual leadership credit, with no need for any member thus to feel forced to resort to cheap treatment or shortcuts to acquire the resources required for successful preparation and achievement of the family event.
For international students: the Australian "pub test" is a credibility test of the suitability for employment or which methods are acceptable in places of employment by staff, or more generally in honest or fair exchange relations of any kind, enjoyably practiced by patrons at establishments which serve alcohol. Culturally, it represents the friendly practice of critical reasoning that safeguards and protects the institutions and practice of democràcy and justice, productivity, efficiency and common wealth and wellbeing in a relaxing environment.
More generally, internationally this is a widespread practice in other advanced western culture liberal democratic societies.
