Storage Heaters click on at night, I also have my computer on at night... Although I'd say Storage Heaters

That still doesn't line up. You use your heaters during the summer as well? I don't think you appreciate how much 6500kwh of electricity is.

Even at a cheap 20p per unit that is £1300 before any other charges or usage.

I turn them off during the Summer!

I've ALWAYS done a Meter Reading and submitted it, they even said previously we need to increase your bills to £51 a month. Maybe I'm reading my bill's wrong?

Well you were extremely lucky to only have been less than 4.85p per unit at night. Pay a more normal 20p and your bill nearly quadruples from that alone.

What are Octopus charging at night? Did you tell them you use 6500kwh at night?

I have a noticed a fairly consistent pattern on social media that for whatever reason one bed properties tend to have higher electric readings, I have always found it odd, there is even a person who reported when he moved his readings went down by 60%, even though he used the same devices for the same time in his new home.

I do wonder the state of wiring and meters in properties are reliable enough that we getting consistent reliable measurements across the board.

I was surprised when octopus told me only 80% of meters they test are not faulty, I Was expecting circa 99%.

I need to mention here I am due to get my meter tested soon, waiting for the appointment.

I discovered a few weeks back the measurements are multiples of the readings at the socket.

I wonder if its worth it for him to get his tested as well.

When I first moved into my current property over 10 years ago, I had high gas readings it got tested, was a fairly high bill, the result was never confirmed to me, but they basically swapped the meter and written the bill off, which they wouldnt have done without reason. Readings plummeted after the swap.

Please post the daytime and nightime usage you gave to Octopus and the standing charge and kWh rates for the deal you've signed up for.

@Neil79

None of this adds up.

If your bill is what you say it is no way you'll be getting 70ppm.

Something is a miss

Also. You could run a 1kw heater 24/7 and you'd only use 8700kwh a year.

To put that in perspective if you ran a 3kwh device for 6 months (more than winter) for 12 hours a day (more than over night) you'd that 6500kwh figure.

3kwh*(365days /2) *(12hours) = 6570

I cannot believe storage heaters use 3kwh constant??

Edit. Apparently most storage heaters are 1-3kw.so if there are a few.. It could be that high! :o

bit late to this party... Mine is as follows:
CURRENT:
Next Flex - electric
20.21 p/kWh 26.46 p/day

Next Flex - Gas
3.95 p/kWh 26.12 p/day
(All rates inc. VAT)

What were being moved to on 1st April:
Electric 48.912 p/day 27.090p per kWh
Gas 27.219 p/day 7.225p per kWh

The Cheapest fix EON Next are offering:
Electric
Unit rate 27.09p per kWh
Standing charge 48.91p per day

Gas
Unit rate 7.23p per kWh
Standing charge 27.22p per day

The most amusing....
Electric:
Unit rate 42.67p per kWh
Standing charge 47.69p per day

Gas:
Unit rate 13.71p per kWh
Standing charge 21.51p per day

Dont worry this ones only... £432.40 a month

Looking at the SC even if you had 10 powerwalls, youd still be getting rinsed for the daily SC Rate. I know you can't have water meters removed, can you have request to be disconnected from the grid?

No it's not 6500kwh at night, as I said I'm not very good at doing bill readings......

Hope this helps below

17 Mar 21 - 14 Sep 21
Previous reading Day 33800 : YOUR READ 34319 : 20.65p £107.17 : YOUR READ 519 kWh
Previous reading Night 7657 : YOUR READ 9954 : 4.61p £105.89 : YOUR READ 2297 kWh

I've just entered my meter reading and submitted it
14 Sep 21 = DAY 34319 NOW : 20th Feb 22 = 34910
14 Sep 21 = NIGHT 7657 NOW : 20th Feb 22 = 14607

Looking at that I'm probably using about 6000 - 7000 kwh a year? which includes day/night

It's been cold in this part of Kent for months, starting end of last year... We've had no mild weather down in this part, feeling cold every day!

I really hate storage heaters :( - I'm only using 3 out of 5 and sometimes just 2.

UPDATE :

I was also going to say another reason it's high this time because two of the storage heaters were faulty and last month I had the engineers round and they repaired both of them as they were not working correctly ( too much power, not enough heat )

The problem is that the spreadsheet that works this out doesn't actually calculate unit costs or standing charges. It simply works out what the annual costs are assuming typical use and annual fixed costs.

@chrcoluk - yes - working an example
Nil kWh m (3,100kWh)
North West £146.84 £974.11

so if you use 3100, the 8.5 units a day are, everything included, costing 31.4p each
if you only use 4 units a day the cost should be 4*31.4 = 125.6
but if you are being charged - ripped off at (146.84/365) 40p/day standing and (974.11-146.84 / 3100) 26.6p/unit the daily cost with 4 units will be 147

so the supplier should be charging a low use tarif of (125.6-40)/4 = 21.25p unit, with 40p standing which would give you same overall cost/unit.

Lewis is disingenous in this respect.

I bet we dont see any SVR tariff like what you describing.

The cap for electric favours higher usage users over lower ones, so an empty property or one that barely uses any electric will get a bigger % rise.

A gas rate of 13p a unit? They clearly don't want customers. Which is probably exactly what it is.

But if someone will pay that.. They'll have em!

What do you think of the 12m offer Octopus offered me 413x? I can repost it if you want, I am curious of your input on it.

https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/posts/35455939

That's a really tough call.
Looks like for summer it's a bit moreExpensive on the cap. (ie next 6 months)
It's the winter that's going to be the biter.

I'm in a similar position with mortgage. Trying to "guess" next years interest rates.

It'd be tempted by it. What are the exit fees?
What even happens if you "exit" a fixed term? When end you go variable. But for fixed? Probably need to find out.

I'd say work out extra cost over the summer and any exit fees. At worst case that's the money you will "bin"
If it's a hundred or 2 I think I'd take the fix. As it's a fixed worse case.
Because if in October it goes up to 3k. Yeah you're gonna want that fix!

That's kind of how I did it in October. I knew my winter costs would be 50-100 more (not per month for whole of winter)

(
New 3 year fix :
I got 200 cash back, I
had no exit fees
21.3p elec
5.1p gas
23.7 elec standing
25.0 gas standing
)
Vs
The price cap.

I calced it all out in excel.

so I thought it was worth it at 30ppm extra

Had it been 500? Probably wouldn't have. And that STILL would have been the wrong call

I calculated about 40 month win per month so about £240 gain on SVR(cap) over summer. (electric only, more with gas on top). Right price is cap, left is 12m deal.

If I took the deal its benefit would from Oct onwards, taking it and exiting before then would just give me the worst side of it? As SVR seems a clear winner from April-Oct, like you said its predicting what will happen in Oct.

Also bear in mind I use very little gas. I think most of the hike in Oct will be on gas. Notice how in the figures I quoted the gas unit price skyrocketed.
