"Zhukovsky Airbase is the only place in the whole World where you can fly MiG-25 for hire. There is no other jet available for anybody to fly like MiG-25 that can climb to 80,000 feet in two minutes and stay there. It has reached highest absolute altitude of 123,524 feet (37.65 km) claiming the World record that still stands".

Unofficially MiG-25 has been known to outrun the air-to-air missiles

I think i would like to hire that plane :)

As someone trying to join the RAF I am so envious right now. In fact, I would go as far as to say I hate you. I've got a visit to Brize arranged for mid-march but I'm sure I won't be doing anything as exciting as what you did.

I hate you.

p.s. Nice pics
And just in case anyone is wondering, the aircraft is not called AWACS, it is the E3 Sentry (a militarised Boeing 707). Apologies for the pedantic nature but I've got all that stuff so ingrained into me now it's coming out of my ears.

Were you on the plane with a big guy called Robin?
Sorry, no idea. Didn't know any of the first names of the crew (I assume you meant crew member), and none of the passengers that I was introduced to was called Robin.

What camera did you use for the pics? You were lucky with the weather!
Used my trusty old Canon Ixus 400 digital camera which I'm about to give to my brother so I can get a new camera. And yes, we were lucky with the weather, it was a perfect day for it. We were supposed to go last November but that was called off with 18 hours notice because of the weather.

Thanks all for the replies :).

Is Brize open again? I thought it was closed to fixed wing operations due to resurfacing work? I've been off work for a few days so it's probably complete now :o

Sounds like an awesome day, those photographs are amazing. I love the AWACS pics, it's not often you see them about.

Pretty sweet stuff. Brings back memories...I got a flight in a VC10 from Brize, similar to yours but back when I was a cadet. Up over the north sea refueling harriers and Tornados.

Man...so lucky ;)

Stringy..if you want to be pedantic..its an E3D Sentry :p

Nope, you are both right.

LONDON, August 11 /PRNewswire/ -- AAR CORP. Northrop Grumman was selected as the Preferred Bidder by the UK Ministry of Defence in July 2004.

AWACS and AEW (Airborne Early Warning) are roles of these aircraft.

Those look like banks of wall mounted LCD Tvs down the interior. Obviously I dont think they can be - but what are they?

Nothing as exciting as that! They were actually storage racks that folded down to put coats and bags on, you can see some of the folded down at the back on the right hand side.
