This is what makes red Smarties red!

It's in pretty mcuh everything with red dy in it. Jellys, currys, sweets. Everything. Doesn't disgust me at all. But I do wonder why we need food coloured in such a way..

To find it more appetizing.

Unfortunately a lot of foods/ sweets when prepared are a rather pallid dull mess.

See you would have a nice clean lab made chemical dye if it weren't for hippies wanting "natural" food colorings.

sweets yeah, but most other foods aren't. Currys are a great example for when food colouring isn't needed and jellys.

Curries are a prime example dude, curries are a heavily spiced, heavily coloured dish to disguise the half rotten, dull grey goat meat they contain.
;)

Its only over here its turned into a flavoring choice rather than necessity.

That really is so very true. I can't understand the need of natural products so much, skin in an insect probably goes through 58 chemical processes within the body involving all kinds of nasty chemicals, before it actually grows into skin in the first place, i have no clue why those chemical reactions are fine, but done in a lab they suddenly become evil and bad for you. Considering everything we eat has likely gone through billions, trillions or, you know the next one up, of chemical reactions since the atoms blew out of a supernova 59 trillion light years away before ending up here. People are so naive about where everything comes from but tell them that product X went through a chemical reaction in a lab, and suddenly every atom in the product is evil and gives you cancer, its laughable quite frankly.

Being veggie, and eating healthily I stay away from a lot of highly coloured foods in general, as most of them, separate from these issues, just aren't healthy, pure sugar, high carb, bad fat foods are what tend to have all this stuff added to it and I don't really want to eat them in the first place. THeres plenty of fairly low additive, fairly good for you great tasting chocolates and other things to eat that taste great. I don't feel the need to eat smarties, over a cheaper larger bar of normal chocolate that isn't brightly coloured to attract children to eat it.

It's not Smarties, this is used in loads of stuff. I think it was a contaminated batch which caused the Worcester Sauce shortage a while ago.

Yummy, bring me more peeled bugs.

I've known about cochineal since I was a kid, if it tastes good then nom nom nom

I mean prawns look like scary parasitic worms and yet I love them.....it's all about perception.

T'is fine by me. I love Smarties. However I refuse to eat them since they got rid of the round tubes. It's not right! (I still eat the party packs and McFlurry's, they're fine.)

zomg ! same  Why did they get rid of the round tubes i wonder is pointless !!!

infact, vegetarians shouldn't be eating nestles chocolate products full stop, as they all contain whey powder using the calf enzyme method :)

But Masterfoods (Mars, Snickers etc) have gone back to using vegetarian friendly methods of production (you can argue about the eggs used in Mars as being battery farmed). Or just eat dark chocolate since it will neatly sidestep the issue of dairy products.

If we saw how all our food was prepared we probably wouldnt eat it. A sad truth about modern day society.
