this makes me sick

Right, so let say fuel is 106.5p at the end of the year. Of this, 13.9p is VAT. Actual fuel ex vat is 92.6p

Come Jan and when VAT is potentially restored to 17.5%, we'll pay 108.8 (or 109p).

Just great!

Petrol is made up thus:

Petrol Fuel Duty - 48.35p
VAT (17.5%) - 14.9p
Refinery Petrol Costs - 31.75p
Forecourt Costs - 3p
Forecourt Profit - 2p

So its a lot more than 14p tax :(

The UK is on the downward part of the curve and the law of diminishing returns takes affect. People will just drive less and buy less and tax revenues will keep falling.

It really makes me want to cry whe i see how much tax I pay, don't get me wrong I support welfare as one day I might be unemplyed but at what cost. If I were to not pay tax and put the money in the bank could probably stay unemployed for years after working a few.

The system is being abused, benefits reform is needed very very badly.

yes. its the system but if you looking at the figure i posted it isnt unemployment benefit thats costing the system.

Is that every time you fill a tank? Each day, week, month or year?

Whilst it may not mean much to you it will mean much to hauliers and businesses that need vehicles for their business. I work at a vehicle recovery company and this year we've all had a 10% wage cut and any increase in the duty of fuel will not help things. Any costs have to be passed on to the public / our customers and it will be similar situation all over the country.

There are people out there on low wage jobs who need a car to get too and from work and how their going to be that much more out of pocket. Whilst it may not seem much - that bit more they have to pay means that little less to spend in retail or other things.

Public transport is hardly an option as that too it getting very expensive.
I was too quick to post and my view is very narrow-minded, I withdraw it :) Re. hauliers fuel cost, are they not able to offset money on fuel as a business expense (getting an independent haulier at least a 31% discount on the majority of their fuel)?
