Looking at buying this, there is a bad review saying its not true 700w, is that true?

Tbh it depends what system your getting it for, 700W for a standard system may be slight overkill, have a look @ corsair, much better.

Maybe he just had a faulty one, i have run a Phenom, several hard drives and an 8800gtx off of a 600w stealth Xtreme without any issues.

Ocz make some good psu's and i wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to anyone.

Basically my current PSU is not powerful enough for my new system.

Current PSU is Antec Neo HE 500w

My evolving system is:

C2D E6400 @ 3ghz (Q9550 in march)
4x 1gb Ballistix 1066
1gb GTX 280
XFI Gamer
2x 250gb HDD
3 case fans

I'm also thinking about getting a 700w PSU to help me with future upgrades.

Nit picking, ok they "supply" decent psu's, especially now they are "in partnership", or however you want to put it, with pc power and computing which "supply" some of the best psu's you can buy.

The only reason i might suggest a different psu is your graphics card, the 700w GameXtreme has quad 12v rails each at 18amp. I don't know what the current requirement of the 280gtx is but it maybe close to this or even more. In which case i would strongly recommend a psu with a large single 12v rail. Something like this maybe?

I dont quite understand then why my system is failing with a burning smell coming from the psu and the power connectors are getting really hot.

Sadly that is over my budget, i'm really looking at spending around £70-£80.

It looks like the power requirements for the GTX280 is 550w minimum with 40amps on the 12v.

Their acquisition of PCP&C has actually done nothing to improve the products they push out under their own branding if the ModXStream series is anything to go by. Even with that expertise available to them they still opt for OEMs like Sirtec and cut corners on the quality of components used.

Yeah, exactly.

I thought the buyout of PCP&C would benefit the OCZ branded PSU's, but its done nothing.

Poor show tbh.

I had one of those. Blew up after 10 days use and that was with a less demanding rig than my current one. Would'nt touch one with a bargepole.

If it's any help, a GTX 280 draws 50w idle and 178w max load. See here for figures. I would have thought your 500w would be ok.

I think it's 225w for the 280 (and 285w for the 295 when it's available!) Need a separate PSU just for the gfx card soon.

A Corsair HX 520W should be fine for what you need. The Wattage of your PSU isn't the problem. Its the Amps needed on your +12V rails.

the last time I did maths at school, 4x18 = 72, or am I missing something here ?

Lets see I run an E8500E0, 4gig DDR2 OCZ Sli 1066 on an ASUS P5Ke Wifi Premium mobo, BFG8800GTX with a duo orb cooler(needs its own supply), 2x750gig hitachi deskstar and 1x500 deskstar along with 3 x Pioneer DVDr Sata writers, 2 x case fans as well as the tower heating control system and a whole host of USB goodies attached. Take from that what you want, but this PSU handles it flawlessly.

+1 for this, it has 3 18A 12V rails. A solid psu.

If you figure in the rest of the system (likely to high-end) then yes, that would be minimum. When I built mine with a single 280, 8 HDs, 2 DVD burners, X-fi and sundry bits I figured an Enermax 850 would be a safe bet. I was annoyed to find the Enermax Galaxy 850 would not quite fit my case, so for a while I ran that rig on my old Enermax 650. It seemed fine, didn't overheat (PWR fan wasn't going flat out) and I likely could have left it at that. However, the shiney new 850 PSU was sat in a corner unused so I modded the case to accept it. Not sure I'm any better off though.
