Those who put up Xmas decs very early

Putting up the tree was done traditionally at the start of advent which marks the lead up to the celebration of the birth of Jesus. Kind of the whole point of Christmas.

Dis, I respect the hell out of you, and visualise you by your posts as the intelligent younger brother that I never had, but there’s no way on God’s green earth that I’m accepting a “rule” for when to put up a Christmas tree.
A guide line or protocol I can live with, but not a rule :rolleyes:

Don't shoot the...town crier? I didn't make the rules! I also don't observe them. I'm a 12 days before kinda guy.
 
Used to have a neighbour that put her stuff up in September, then she would call the local news and tell them that "someone" in the street had their decorations up already then act all surprised when they came to look. :rolleyes:

Of course it would be one thing if it looked like they were put up well, but these were put up like someone sprayed the house front wall with glue then fired a load of cheap christmas crap at it and whatever stuck they went with.
 
Since we have started putting up our decorations later in December I find the whole process more Christmas-y. It feels like a real break putting up the general decorations after the kids finish school and putting up the main tree on Xmas Eve after I've finished work. I'm happy for people to do as they like but personally I get more pleasure from leaving it later.

The only sad thing for me is that everyone seems to be bored of Christmas by Boxing Day so not long after it should have just started everyone is giving up.
 
Never understood the folk who put their decorations up mega early like in November, prattle on about Xmas on FB the whole time right up until Xmas, then pack them all away on Boxing day and claim they are done for another year. :rolleyes:

I put my tree up on the 23rd Dec last year and took it down on 3rd Jan.

My FB feed is already full of Will Ferrell Santa’s coming and only 50 sleeps until Christmas rubbish. Always from girls.

The colour we now call orange used to be seen as a shade of red. Which "proves" that Diddums is an immortal because it's been a few centuries since the word 'orange' entered English and that shade of red became seen as a different colour.

They're both originally religious events. Neither of them are christian in origin (both predate christianity), but they did start off as being religious.

* Strictly speaking dies natalis sol invictus rather than saturnalia, but only really for "Christmas" day itself. Most of the customs associated with christmas have their origins in saturnalia (which was celebrated on the winter solstice) but which was soon extended into Ceralia (2 days later) and Dies Natalis Sol Invictus (on what we would call the 25th of December) and to some extent the other way as the saturnalia period started earlier and earlier. And became more and more commercial. Which resulted in some Romans complaining about it starting too early and/or being too commercialised and too detached from the original religious meaning. People are people.
