Those with dogs...does yours howl?

For those saying the dog doesn't like the noise.

The dog howls because he relates to the pitch of the noise which he is hearing, in the same way they will howl to sirens in the distance and different tunes on the T.V. so please don't read too much in to it.

They are loads of pics of Max floating around these forums for those who want to look but I will try and get more pictures soon.

For the record Max is a 23 week old german shepherd.

I'm totally in with that. Even a simple "awwww whoooooo!" vocalised from a person can get a doggie to howl back. To me it is a sign that the doggie loves the person and tries to mimick. Affection, not opposition. :)

edit: and KaHn: finally saw the vid at home. Beautiful doggie!!!

The next door neighbour’s dog howls occasionally when he is left inside after dark by himself.

If we play the recorder he will howl until we stop. Like he's singing along. He also goes mental and barks at areoplanes and helicopters. He used to dislike wheels to the point he would bite them whilst moving e.g: the wheelbarrow and bikes. (Chocolate Labradour - probaly explains it!)

Ours doesn't howl, but does make a variety of funny noises, it's like he's trying to talk to you

However when someone walks past the house he barks very loudly and he also growls, which if he does when he's lying down you can feel the floor vibrate, it sounds awesome aswell.

So your dog is exhibiting behaviour that is undesirable and everytime it does it you reward it with a cuddle?:confused:

Please tell me you don't have kids!

Why the need to be sarcastic? if he didn't know about not re-enforcing undesirable behavour then maybe just offer some advise without the sarcasm.

Isn't howling or BOL (barking out load) a sign of boredom? Plenty of toys seems to do the trick with our little one.

Nope, barking randomly can be a sign of a new enviroment but you will get that with older dogs when rehomed. Max doesn't bark at anything unless its in the garden.

Howling on the otherhand is a dogs way of talking.

If you want I will take a video of my Shar Pei crying and barking for treats? That's pretty funny.

cool German Shepherd, I have a German Shepherd as well as a Border Collie and Rough Collie, and they all howl...

The rough collie I can get howling by trying to howl myself, then the rest all follow, its like a alpha thing.. One starts they all start, like they are answering etc.... Toys that make noise, lawnmower or even the vacuum cleaner can set them off....

My dogs end up working as a pack as well, which sometimes concerns me... The Rough collie is the Alpha, she commands, and she takes control and its quite interesting to watch the other two howl or bark with her..... Then attack the lawnmower..!!:D

Dogs are pack animals, at the end of the day they are just the same as wolves, and they howl..!

Nice dog BTW.

My GF's Shar Pei doesn't really follow Max or work in a pack, I think she's a bit dumb :)
