thoughts of win8

I installed a copy on a VM. Not liking it too much at the moment. It's like they are trying to turn my desktop in to a mobile device.

I need to get SQL 2008 installed and some other business apps to see how they fair on it.

Also, Aero is not available. I can see a lot people being very unhappy about that.

App store integration is good though.

Bing Maps is **** for a desktop however. You can only set your location via location services, which for a desktop is based on your ISP's location, not your actual location. It set me to be somewhere in Farnham.

It's brilliant.
Desktop is still there and you can easily stay in it and not see metro, if you really dislike it. Or use a 3rd party app. But IMO you would be silly for doing it, live tiles are great and you only need to see metro when you quickly want to check a number of things at the same time. Say emails, weather or other live info you don't need to open an app up for.

The new start Screen is amazing, ever since smart phones came out, it's been annoying actually having to open app/website to see info. Rather than it just being displayed. Live tiles sorts that out and in a much neater and nicer way than widgets/gadgets.
It's supefast and reliable and everything just works. Combined with the new features like refresh/sync options. It's an extremely powerful and good OS. It does take a fair while to get used to metro, but now there's a few apps out I am starting to use metro more. Really liking the news app for example. Needs a 3rd part email app though. Can't wait for release and see what apps come.

Have been running it for a few weeks now and really like it. Hyper-V is one of the main reasons why I like it.

It was hard to get used to the no start button but I'm getting used to it quickly enough. Running it on a high spec quadcore laptop with 24GB RAM and an SSD ensures that it all seems fairly quick!

I tried it, it was ok and snappy (I tried the final technet ISO).

For me tho, I had a couple of driver issues and some apps where causing errors, and shutting down for no reason.

I had non of those problems after I reinstalled Win7. So its not any hardware issue :(

I am of the opinion that MS messed up big time with 8. Tablets form such a tiny portion of the global PC market that the concentration on touch gestures etc is wasted on a desktop. The fact you can turn off the Metro rubbish and all the touch components leaves much of the OS left hidden and thus poor value. No business is going to look twice at it and only MS die hards that have to have the latest, rather than the greatest will jump on board. Shame as Win 7 is brilliant and 8 should have been built on its success. Roll on IE10 as a separate DL and Windows 9 Pro.

The old saying "Don't fix what isn't broken" springs to mind for me, they should have just released a separate tablet version with all of the 'Metro' fluff added on or at least made it optional during install.

I simply can't take an OS that consists of big brightly coloured buttons and demotes the desktop to being an application seriously, it's like something from a kids toy.

I can do pretty much everything faster/more efficiency on Windows 7 along with the added visual prettyness of Aero.

Hi, what do you all think of windows 8? will you be upgrading to it?

You should try it for yourself and form your own judgement.

There's a lot of rubbish from people who've barely used it jumping on a popular bandwagon saying it'll be a failure. Other's who are over glorifying it.

There's Release Previews and Trials that are free to try. Give them a go, but also give yourself plenty of time too as it's not something you'll get used to the changes in just a few hours, especially if you've been using Windows for a number of years.

With the exception of the standby issue I've got, I'm quite liking Win 8. Will definitely be buying at least one copy, and may even upgrade all four machines in the house (depending on the fine print for the £25 online offer).

My mum also wants a copy ... go figure ;)

What's your standby issue? I noticed something strange going on when waking from sleep sometimes but very rarely.

With an SSD maybe your not meant to let laptops sleep are you? Too many writes?

Touch computers, vastly outweigh another Other type of pc. Smartphones on their own outlay pcs, before we even start to look at tablet share and predicted tablet market.

Yet another case of fingers in ears and ignore the stats, luckily MS hasn't done that yet again and may remain relevant in this new computing era.

I've been using it since around 15th of August at work and at home. I couldn't go back to Windows 7 now, purely for the window manager / metro

Urban myth. With normal use an SSD will be well past it's best by the time you wear it out. Certainly no need to treat them any different to a HDD.

Some of these guides and recommendations frustrate me. Not aimed at you, but some people go to such extremes to avoid writes, they may as well leave their SSDs in the box.

Just remember. Give yourself plenty of time. I can almost guarantee you will hate it at first because of the changes.

It's pretty bad - FACT

It's such a marmite OS release, everyone I know hates it but there's some die hards on here that seem to like it. I've no idea how a normal non tech person will get on with learning the really weird layout and hidden features.
