Thoughts on Excessive Speed

The point is still valid.
no it's not. you're using a made up perfect world scenario. everyone else has already accepted that the car, conditions, driver ability play a part. we've got that, we know that's the hill you want to die on. but what some of the rest of us are trying to get across to you is that we don't generally drive in perfect scenarios, there are things that can and do happen that are completely out of your control as a driver and the faster you are going when those things happen will have a big impact on the outcome in a crash.

But thats the point, if thats the case you arent driving to the conditions :)

I saw the pictures. To destroy a brand new Bentley like that you really needed to go some. Pictures are horrid but it can be a wake up call to some. With all these electric cars doing 0-62 in under 4s etc it’s going to happen more often I think. Add the fact that car’s basically drive themselves people are even more disconnected from driving. I have an s2000 and that is plenty fast enough for the road to have fun, it screams, it’s pointy and fun. Don’t need anymore. Could still kill my self in it if I tried. It’s all about your personal hunger for risk. RIP to those two in the Bentley but we all sadly know what it was caused by.

I see far more dangerous driving day to day which has nothing to do with excessive speed, and more to do with the morons behind the wheel.

it's cool I got it, you just want to harp on about your pointless perfect world scenario. at this stage you are just trolling now for lols which is fine, but to paraphrase you from earlier seeing as you don't understand the point everyone else is making.....moving on.

Except its not a perfect world scenario, its being a competent driver? There is nothing wrong with excessive speed as long as done so in the right conditions. If the point you are making is that speed makes things worse when *insert random unpredictable event here* occurs then youre likewise living in a fantasy as the situation has changed and youve gone from being a competent driver to one who is relying on luck. Speed is just another variable of many when driving, just because you have more of it doesnt mean its automatically bad.

ding ding. we have a winner - you're starting to get it now (again, see how i can be sarky but it doesn't really add anything to the conversation)........luck has to play a part in driving no matter how good you think you are or how good the conditions are or how good your car is, because life ain't a perfect world scenario. so by reducing your speed you are also helping to mitigate against those unpredictable events. but tell me how i'm living in a fantasy world by stating speed can make things worse when an unpredictable event occurs?
Tbh I dont consider "luck" to be part of it, its all about driving to the conditions of the roads.
this is your post that kicked this part of the debate off - luck plays a part in virtually every aspect of your everyday life. you can start off driving to the condition of the roads, yup all good. but something goes pear shaped at 170mph or whatever you number you want to use and you will be relying on a whole lot more luck to get out of that situation than if you were driving at the speed limit.

I'm no angel but luck at 50mph is gonna turn out much better than luck at 100mph....when those two meet???

Hypothetical situation.

Driving down a road and a horse runs out infront of your car.

At 50mph you take out the legs of the horse, it lands on your roof and crushes you to death.

Or,

100mph, you take out the legs of the horse, and drive under the body due to the speed you are carrying it and lands behind your car, you get to go home.

Which would you rather be doing?

(not going to lie, I actually pondered this the other day while pulled over and this *massive* horse trotted by in the other direction and I noticed the riders boots were higher up than the roof of my car)

50 because i've more chance to avoid the situation than at 100mph. neither you nor i know what will happen when we hit the horse. but almost every time, driving slower will reduce the risk of serious injury. another pointless argument, well played.

What about doing 150mph and driving past before the horse even runs into the road?

Can't believe you missed this obviously preferable scenario

Option 3 drive a "was that a speed bump?"mobile.

Why not drive around at 4mph just in case something jumps out in front of you?

Didn't realise horses were so prevalent near Sainsbury's car parks.

A competent driver would also be aware that unpredictable things can happen and control their speed accordingly.

Agreed, I got an eNiro recently, and despite having double the bhp and acceleration of my old Octavia, it feels significantly slower
