What is the general consensus on internet piracy these days? With media perhaps becoming easier to access, it means that piracy is less defendable than before?

Does it depend on the media itself? Is a movie alright to pirate but a game not?

Really interested to hear your thoughts.

P.S: Could a kind mod please add a poll with the question, "Internet piracy is okay?", with the responses, "Yes", "No" and "It depends". Thank you.

Black and white question for a grey argument.

Copyright laws are out of date.

Does it justify stealing? No. Does it justify a change in the law? Yes.

I voted it depends.

don't think its ok. still do it though. as, i wouldn't steal a handbag or a car. how to combat it ? no idea. But i think if studios etc did do something were you could stream extremely soon after a film release and a knock down cost ... then more people would go for it

I don't think piracy is ok and I detest freeloaders - however I equally detest companies that haven't caught up and embraced the digital age, etc. and have no sympathy for them when they drag their feet or are locked in backwards mentalities but then whine about piracy especially when their content is delayed stupid lengths of time or released at extreme prices, etc.

EDIT: IMO 2/3rds of people who pirate content are consumers that the companies failed to reach and only have themselves to blame, only about 1/3rd would never pay anyway.

There needs to be a decent priced paid version of something like Cartoon HD. That's how people want content these days as was discussed in a thread in the movies section, films should just be available same day of release on a paid streaming service and have a few cinemas for the hardcore.

There needs to be better ways to get people to buy/sub the stuff legit. It took the music industry long enough to get to grips with that so I don't understand why the TV/Movie business has taken so long. I don't want 3 different services to get what I want. I want one service that allows me to stream any film within reason and tv show. Here's my £30-50 a month.

I don't download because my connection sucks, if it didn't I most likely would. My son does hammer Cartoon HD though.

People are right that its not legally theft, but the concept of theft was never intended to deal with data (or *gulp* broadly equivalent 'non-chattels'). Still, contrary to popular belief, distributing such content without making a profit is not only unlawful but criminally illegal (although saying that, it is a question of fact as to whether the accused actions have actually prejudiced the copyright owner).

As far as I'm concerned, it is morally irresponsible. The argument that no loss is incurred is a total farce as by downloading unlawfully, you circumvent a gain that is otherwise rightfully accrued. To say that you wouldn't have paid for that content is niether here nor there. You didn't have a right to do it nor was it the copyright owner's choice to permit you to do it.

I think a large majority of us on here will be guilty in some form or another. Its wrong in a lot of ways, but I think we need to move forward and adapt to the new situation rather than wasting time on futile resistance.
Honestly I don't even feel bad about having taken advantage of things as they are..

I pirate films but I buy games.
I appreciate programmers more than I do Hollywood.

I used to buy DVD's but realised it became a bit more about collecting stuff than getting anything meaningful from the film, then Bluray arrived and I decided I wasn't going to start repeating the process. So I didn't buy a flat telly and I didn't buy a Bluray player.

And practically I can't afford that kind of expenditure anyway, so downloads it is.

Some of my work is out there for free, thanks to piracy. It is uncool and it does hurt the little guys like me, no matter what excuses people might come up with.

There is of course the fact that if it were not available for free, a person would simply not have the content at all as opposed to being forced to pay for it. For example a pirate may watch 100 films a year, but if he didn't have access to them for free he'd have only bothered to pay for a select few of them. Cinema's still holds appeal and I know lots of pirates who have Blu-Ray collections of the films they love. Of course as said above that doesn't give people the right just take what they want but it's definitely worth consideration when looking at the problem as a whole.
Projected losses from piracy are massively inflated for this reason.

Applications like Spotify and Neflix are slowly taking over which is a sort of compromise. Giving people the freedom of access they enjoy with pirating and offering it for an affordable price.

I also think people are more likely to pay for something if they feel it may actually affect the owner. They're more likely to buy your books, Edrof, than the new Avengers film which will make insane figures regardless.

What I don't understand is why the movie industry doesn't do what the music industry is doing. That is allowing all music to be available for a flat fee a month (i.e. Spotify).

I am sure loads of people would pay £10 a month for all the films they wanted.

I think the majority of us on here will be guilty of it in one way or another if we were to be honest, and its wrong in lots of ways, but I wont tell if you don't.;)

If films could be purchased straight after their time in the cinema for a decent price, at 1080p/4k and which allowed you to keep the film digitally, piracy would be done for a lot of people, including myself.

I don't want a subscription to Now TV, or Netflix or Love Film (why pay to keep nothing in the end), I want a straight purchase of a digital film at HD quality without taking the micky with the price.

Pirating as it is at the minute i only really see as being ok for getting media thats otherwise unavailable legally.

Eg:pirating the latest film just because its free isnt good, but pirating an old tv series that you cant even get dvd's for now isn't.

Or in the scenario if your broadband is insufficient for the current crop of streaming services (i know a guy in this situation stuck on 60k "broadband" and he's forced to download where he could otherwise stream)

I agree films in particular need a shake up, hollywood has a LOT to learn from steam
