Thoughts on using your real name for a domain?

Given the choice between firstname-surname.co.uk and firstnamesurname.eu which do you think is better? I think the .co.uk is better but the 2nd one doesn't require me to say forename hyphen surname when telling someone it.

I presume the .com is taken? I think I would prefer a .eu without the hyphen.

I know a guy who's a web developer, who loves really short domains using fairly unused TLD. For example, jim.je

It's very suitable for e-mail use.

All the sites I look at don't do private registrations for .eu, they say only available for .com .net etc.
123-reg and godaddy both do

my mate has catp.eu I did have firstnamelastname.eu because they were 1.99 when I got them, but let it lapse

Can I just make a couple of points about a few of the posts in this thread:

Private Registrations - Do so at your own risk.
ICANN quite clearly state in their Terms & Conditions for registering a domain name that you must use your correct name and address.
ICANN can take a domain away from somebody if they suspect details entered are incorrect - and that includes your ISP putting their details in.
I'm not saying it will happen, but it can as you are in effect breaking the T&C's.

This is not the case with .uk domains.
Nominet offer a "Remove Registrant Information" for private domain name registrations.
However if you are a company this option is not open to you.

Domain Squatters - The majority of the situations described by people in this thread is not squatting.
Basically your upset that somebody got to a domain name before you - it's just tough, domain names are first come first served.
Squatting is when a domain name is purchased with the express intention of selling to a particular company.
In most cases this falls over as the company simply claims copyright and gets the domain given to them.

No website does not mean that the domain is not being used.
I own domains that do nothing but email, I have others I use for private FTP and others that are for nameservers.
This does not make me a "squatter" - it just means I was lucky enough to register the domain first.

Even if the domain you want has a "For Sale" sign on it - why was this just not a sensible purchase for the owner to make some money?
It's the same as any other commodity.

I wanted khan.co.uk but some Mr Mehul Patel has bought it and not done anything with it.

What a see unt!

Squatters = Hate!

His name isn't even Khan, why has he bought it?

FFS?
