Thread drift

In real life conversations drift the same here, they develop, go backwards, go somewhere new, it’s the normal way of things. It’s what makes this place different from all the rest. If you start to enforce keeping on topic this forum will die and become a meaningless backwater. I want some moderation not thought control. So leave as is.

This, a thousand times this. Well said that man.

We don't need no education, we don't need no thought control.....

Dunno, up to the admins really.

I assumed he meant the members forum, but if the subsequent story is true then it appears to just be a simple limited ban.

Well, you can, allow me to demonstrate:

Example reply to OP 1:

No it wouldn't annoy me, but I think a little topic deviation does make for decent entertainment a lot of the time.

Example reply to OP 2:

Lol, eggface.

Example 2 is not so much a topic drift as banter and internet speak. That's a different kettle of fish, but again not necessary to control. This is the internet. This should be freedom of speech. People are open to "lol eggface" with replies in real life, so why should it be controlled on a forum? Where do you draw the line? Once you open the can of worms...
i.e. Are you suggesting nobody should be allowed to simply reply "Lol" as an appreciation to a funny post/thread? It would kill the forum.

Nobody has ever said "lol eggface" to me in real life, I feel left out of the inclusive society we live in.

Because someone with no interest in cars, say, may make stupid and irrelevant comments in that forum but not in, again for example, GD.

He's called TwoBlackLines.

I haven't read the rest of the thread, however for me, sometimes I ask a question and I just want a simple answer, other times it doesn't bother me.

As an idea, you could add an option to the forum when posting that if the thread starter wants it to stay on topic it says so in the title. Similar to TalkPhotography, they have the ability to choose an option on posting a thread that puts [critique] before the thread title indicating that the poster wants proper critique.

Or maybe add another section to the forums? Speakers Corner is great for serious discussions, and GD is great for general rubbish, but what if you want a serious answer to a general question? GD is useless for it.

But why would you be banned from one forum and not another?

surely if the infringement that gave you the ban warranted it, then you should be banned period.

MM I understand, but the others?

You could be a good overall member but suppose for instance you just didn't get on with Apple products and only went into that sub-forum to troll then it might be appropriate to simply remove that forum as one you can access thereby removing the temptation or ATI/Nvidia in the graphics cards section. You can still enjoy the rest of the forums but with much less risk of being a problem - of course some people are simply tools and will be whatever forum they are in so this approach wouldn't work at all.

It's not something that happens all that often as far as I'm aware, of the relatively few times it happens outside of MM it may well be done at a users request - vonhelmet was banned from GD for quite a while after he asked hence having it in his signature.

I sugguest you take a look at the Relic forums, some of the best moderators over there.

This forum has a lot of kids who think they can post anything. Looks bad for the company, it feels at time OcUK let the members walk all over them. There are also a few 'favorites' of the mods who get away with too much, also looks bad for the company.

But to do it properly you will loose a lot of people, but i cant see that being a bad thing. Some of the sections on the OcUK forums like the Hardware help are great, really show how there are some fantastic people on these forums. General discussion really brings it down.

If they remove the oneplace people cn talk crap and vent then normal sections will be litterd with it.

Stop being so old.

Yes. Some of the best and more interesting threads have gone on a complete tangant from the original post.

I would miss this if off topic posts were deleted.

This.

Let discussions evolve and change, makes it a lot more fun! Doubt we would ever had the classics like the NickG Asda thread and the "am I good looking" thread without drift being allowed.

The real discussion we should be having is this.....can we have the OLD avatars back plz (the gun ones)

How boring would threads be if they were limited by their titles?

Its works very very well the way it is.
