Thread drift

I think it depends on the subject and the way the OP is worded. The thing is the conversation will always evolve and that's the joy of discussion. However, when someone is asking a simple question like "provide me information on X" and people start stating that Y is better and that Z is also worth a look - it's a little bit irritating for the OP as all they wanted to hear about was X, and are not interested in Z&Y.

There is a judgement call to be made. IF the OP doesn't mind the thread going OT, then fine, however if the OP is getting frustrated with the responses and requests some pruning then I think it's to the OP's and Moderating team's discretion whether or not any pruning takes place.

How do you explain the twoblacklines thread in motors then? Is it a case of "do as I say, not as I do"? As long as the Dons are getting the lulz it's ok?

Threads should be exactly like conversations (excuse me if i've just stated the obvious). When you're talking to a group of people the topic may stand for a few minutes but eventually people move on to talk about related things and the conversation will evolve...

This is fine imo, as long as the op is happy with the answers given before it goes off (like freefaller said)

Nearly every thread I've seen on this forum ends up drifting, it's good and allows threads to evolve and not end up turning into a grind that just ends up dieing and going to the bottom.

As a whole OcUK is very lax on the way we deal with off topic posts. The mere thought of reigning this in, especially in motors caused an uproar.

However, there are other forums that are a lot stricter than us, and so I feel the pain of feeling constricted during discussions.

[Corsa]Fox, made the very poignant point of saying that thread drift is key to having good discussions and a community feeling. (I am paraphrasing and just adding bits as they fit, but the spirit of his point stands)

I'm not suggesting the modding here will change at all, I'm saying this as a normal member, not a Don.

So, my question is: if we stopped all off topic posts why would it annoy the hell out of you and why would it be detrimental to the forum?

in the life forums, no. in technical forums yes, to a degree. its annoying as ****watching thread after thread descend in to nit-picking, finger-pointing, off-topic nonsense.

in stark contrast, the best threads in GD and motors are those that are totally mental. This does not need changing imo.

Not sure which thread you mean - but I'll have a look in Motors and see if I can find it, and then will reply back.

Fair enough, don't get me wrong I thought it was funny so I wasn't complaining but it sounded like you were reading off one hymn sheet and singing off another. Obviously you didn't know about it then - it's the bank one that has now been locked in motors.

It wasn't even motors related though? It was a financial thread that had a mention of a car later in it.

Yeah, tbl has had a couple of threads in gd lately that were disguised motors ones that were moved/locked

All discussions evolve, if they weren't kept in the same thread it just means people will create more and more new threads to accompany the changes.
