Three body Problem (2024)

I'm not convinced they need another 2 seasons to wrap this up
they already went 1.5 books deep and the 3rd book is really kinda meh, the guy must have been taking hallucinogenics when he wrote it

This was surprisingly good. Loved the concept of it and the idea of the sophons. Reminded me a little bit of For All Mankind in the what would happen if a situation gave us more reason to focus on technology advancements other than purely financial.

I’d never say no to more sci-fi but it’s hard to see how they stretch this for 2 more seasons.

In their defence having a hard stop might work in their favour, there’s no need to stretch this out too much further. That being said I did really enjoy season one.

So I was listening to a True crime podcast (Rotten Mango) about the murder of one of the Chinese excutives that is involved with getting the three body problem TV show made. This history of this book series and how the IP was moved about is interesting.
In the video she reads what I assume is the first chapter of the book. About Ye Wenjie and her summoning the aliens. I was hooked, I had to know what happens.

I watched this over the weekend and I think I love the premise of the show/book more than the actual show itself.

Of the main 5, I found only jack to be likeable. Chief **** annoyed me with his "I will only swear loyalty to Jin" nonsense. (Is this a netflix addition or was this in the book?).
There was the cringe dialogue were two of main characters were talking about not being smart enough to achieve anything in life  . I get Auggie being upset about seeing the dead childs leg, but her not properly understanding the danger the human race is in, annoyed me. She is meant to be an intelligent women. Why was she even watching that Top secret mission in the first place. They should have shipped her out as soon as the nanofibre did its job. Why was she even in searching the wreckage.

The psycho women who kills Jack. How was she strong enough to pin him to the window? How did she escape the police raid with her leg shot up? did nobody see her crawling out of the building?

The below spoiler simply highlights that a scene is more important than people would first assume
The scene where Saul talks to Yin WenJie, is supposed to be her giving Saul some highly useful information (Which explains why she gets killed by the psycho lady and why the trisolarians are trying to kill Saul), but it seems like they butchered the analogy while trying to bring it to a Western Audience.

I just thought the scene was kind of weird, then I was really confused when she gets killed by them, but after my escapade down some rabbit holes I get it.

Thanks to Stovepipes comment about book summaries on Youtube I went on a massive rabbit hole and oh boy I understand why this book is so popular.

There are major Spoilers from here on out, so you can stop reading if you wish.

I had heard of the dark forest theory I did not realise that it was this book series that made it popular (the second book is called the dark forest). I guess if you know what the dark forest theory is then sorry about the spoilers, and if you don't know what it is, try to avoid Googling it:D

This joke is technically a spolier for the second book but if you don't know the theory in the above spoiler, it won't make any sense.

M.A.D Mutually Assured Doxxing

The enitire theory from the book is a departure from the SCI-FI we are usually exposed to and offers a tense thrill that you don't usually get.
Singer casually deciding to flatten the entire solar system after it becomes possible to pinpoint earths solar system, but then it turns out that some other race actually threw their weapon 1 year prior to singer.
Also they were aware from the very first communication with the trisolarians but were simply waiting to pinpoint the exact location.

I do hope more Sci-Fi stories use this theory because there are so many options and directions stories could take with this.

Binged it over the last week.

The ship/nano fibre was brutal and jaw dropping! Auggie is v hot.

Loved the first episodes, the mystery, the VR etc, but the last few episodes were ridiculous and no idea what is going to happen next. We've invented FTL travel, cryogenics, saved the 3rd world from dysentery, etc, all in a few short months. Are we going full on Star Wars when they build the moon base?

Enjoyed it - weak ending, See what S2 brings :)

On episode 5.
Not enjoying this.
Things don't seem to make sense. Unless it does in the end unless it's all a time thing.

for example that red pouch in the ship. Why did they risk the weird nano fibre thing where they could have lost it, damaged it, lost in sea etc... Unless it's some sort of time thing.

They discussed options of how to get the HDD with minimal risk. They said a traditional storming of the ship would most likely have given the crew more time to destroy the HDD, the wire thing would have taken seconds/minutes and before anyone knew what was going on, it would have been over.

The wire thing gave them the best opportunity of retrieving the HD intact.

I'm not sure that's true, but it certainly looked cool :)

I wondered if they did the math on the height of the ship and the likelyhood of the server being at a certain point
The wires could have cut straight through the drive

Gave up after 4. Not half as smart as it seemed to think it was. Utter rubbish tbf.

Yeah I'm sat thinking..

Either this is really clever and it's all going to be revealed. The stupid decisions are some self fulfilling prophecy or something.

Or it's one of those shows that just convoluted for convulsions sake and thus seems to get good reviews.

For all the fanfare this is getting I feel like I must be missing something because just seems borderline ridiculous.
More loop holes than a hula hooping competition

I'd rate it 5/10 if I'm right.. The idea is amazing, but execution seems sloppy.

Yeah agree with above. I persevered with it, was ok but I doubt I'll watch the next season. It's a pretty good premise, just found it a bit dull. I think the idea of an alien race coming to destroy us in 400 years and how the human race copes and evolves in that time is a good one though.

Having read the Bobiverse books since watching this, I realise if nothing else the FTL comms is accepted in SciFi as likely to be possible. (I think I had issue with this before) In fact, the story feels a little Bobiverse like.
