Three missing girls found.

I remember reading about Colleen Stan who was kidnapped and held as a slave for 7 years, put into a coffin under a bed for 23 hours a day.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kidnapping_of_Colleen_Stan

"According to Stan, Hooker feared he had given his slave too much freedom - he took her back to his mobile home and locked her in the wooden box under his water bed; she remained in the box 23 hours a day for the next three years.[15] Bodily functions were dealt with by her using a bed pan which she hooked under herself with her feet.
It was stated in court that the Hooker children were told "Kay" (a form of Stan's slave name K) had gone home and that at night, after the children had gone to bed, Hooker would take her out of the box to feed and torture her.[16] She was not allowed to make any noise and she had to lie still twenty-three long hours at a time, in the dark with little air to breathe. In the summer conditions were especially harsh on her as the temperatures would swelter to over 100 degrees in her box. She ate scraps which were always cold and usually leftovers.
"

Says he got kidnapped while hitch hiking. Interesting because all three women in the Cleveland story got kidnapped after accepting a lift too. Not very bright.

Charles Ramsey: 'Hey bro I'm at 2207 Seymour Avenue, West 25th. Hey check this out, I just came from McDonald's right? And I'm on my porch eating my little food and this broad is trying to break outa the ******* house next door to me.

'There was a bunch of people on the street right now and **** and we are like, "Whats wrong with you, whats the problem?"

'And she's like, "This mother ****** has kidnapped me and my daughter". Said her name is Linda Berry or some ****. I don't know who the **** that is, I just moved over here bro.'

Dispatcher: 'Sir you have to clam down and slow down, is she still in the street?'

Ramsey: Seymour Avenue.

Dispatcher: Is she still in the street or where did she go?

Ramsey: Yeah I'm looking at her, she right now. She calling you all, she on the other phone.

Dispatcher: Is she black, white or Hispanic?

Ramsey: Err she white, but the baby look Hispanic.

Someone should shout this guy a cheeseburger!

How did this even manage to happen?

The house doesn't look that big to begin with and I'm guessing they were kept in the basement, however basements still are not THAT big.

And for 10 years?! why didn't she try and escape on many occasions?

I cant understand how 3 people can stay in a basement for that long without even breaking out or overpowering the 1 person.

Learned helplessness, threats of serious violence if they try anything, torture reducing them into nervous wreaks with no self-esteem/ability to do anything to defend themselves.

It's not hard to fathom how it could happen.

Say I kidnapped you, then tortured you by removing a couple of fingers slowly with a pair of scissors - then said "try anything and I'll remove an arm an inch at a time over the next few months" - what would you do?.

Break free from my cuffs and strangle you to death...

On a lighter note, if there can be one, it must be weird for them seeing how the world has moved on since they went missing (presuming they were kept completely away from the outside world).

Here's a list of a few things that didn't exist when they went missing (or weren't globally known at least)...

The iPhone and Android smartphones (2007 onward)
Tablet PCs (2010 onward)
Facebook (2004)
Youtube (2005)
Twitter (2006)
High Definition TV (Hard to age since it's been around forever but not widespread in homes til mid 2000s)
TomTom in car sat nav

Oh an the OCUK forums (2006)

Death penalty is too nice for this crime. Lock him in a box and torture him for 13 years, see how he likes it. Then you can just lock the door and forget about him. Stuff like this sickens me.

The really awful thing is how often this happens, and how many people around the world are in the same situation and can't get out, how many people will never get out of these situations :(

I think this is really disturbing to think about, i mean i know bad stuff happens, war, violence, accidents etc but to think that right now there are possibly thousands of people hidden away in some horrible place without anyone ever knowing they're there or much hope of escape is quite depressing, it seems somehow worse knowing what humans are capable of, like that girl being born into that situation, people could go their whole lives like that for all we know. :(

Knew he would deny it (still not 100% confirmed). His lawyer has a point about the media witch hunt but I am really struggling to think how on earth he is going to defend all of the "alleged" evidence. Lawyer convinced him to plead not guilty so he can propel his career much?

The attorneys for a man who is accused of keeping three women in captivity for about a decade say he will plead not guilty to charges of kidnapping and rape.

Attorneys Craig Weintraub and Jay Schlachet told a local television station, WKYC-TV, that Ariel Castro has been portrayed as a "monster" in the media, and after meeting with him Tuesday they didn't see him that way. Weintraub says it was unfair and offensive that "the media and the community want to demonize this man before they know the whole story".

Schlachet said details of Castro's innocence "will be disclosed as the case progresses". Weintraub said that Castro "loves dearly" the child he fathered with alleged kidnap victim Amanda Berry while she was in captivity.

Castro is charged with kidnapping and raping Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight.

We all know how the media like to stir things up (e.g. Zimmerman) but they really didn't have to do anything in this case. I don't particularly condone the death penalty but it does seem weird/wrong he went into this trail pleading his innocence but managed to make a deal. A deal was even hinted at the start of the trial! How does one plead their innocence but hints at pleading guilty at such an early stage? Did the lawyers know all along (if they didn't - personally I would have thought the insurmountable evidence against him would suggest otherwise) or they persuaded him to change his mind with the offer of not being executed?

Anyway life imprisonment with 1000 year minimum. He claims he isn't a 'monster' and that there was a 'lot of harmony going on in that house'. Deluded!

I think his sentence has a poetic justice to it. Let's just hope they put him with a 6'6" beefcake who likes to be referred to as 'Julie' so he gets the other part of evil he inflicted on his victims.

He even had the gaul to play the victim in the trial, claiming he wasn't a monster just "ill".
