Tiling directly onto plaster

Thanks.

I'm using Wickes STS tile backer board for this. They were £9 each so I got them as easy to cut and manoeuvre, being XPS.

I have a tile levelling system, Screwfix no nonsense one, looks the same as your pic so hopefully ok.

With the pipes in the wall it's not so much how to chase the channel, but the pipe work to get it there neatly. I'll have a think.

Out of interest what are you using to attach these tile backing boards to brick with? I picked some up today from Wickes. Planning on doing the bottom half of the room with tile boards then the top half with plasterboard. Wondering whether I can get away with using plasterboard adhesive for both or if I'll have to get something different for the tile boards.

Knocking back to brick isnt fun. Amazing how much material is in the wall.

Not plasterboard adhesive, flexible tile adhesive. Either dot n dab with 'spankers' or full bed adhesive with no mechanical fixing.

They're going into blocks so I'm planning on a combination of dot and dab tile adhesive (not flexible, Mapei standard set, which doesn't appear to come in a flexible version but then they're going on a wall), then rawl plugs with wedi board washers once the adhesive is dry.

I suggest following the manufacturer advice. Use a flexible adhesive.

I've decided to use a grab adhesive followed by rawl plugs and washers to avoid having to prime the block work. Whilst not explicitly stated in the spec sheet for the board, there's no reason this wouldn't work fine.

not the way to do it as above bodge job it will give you headache.
i would just prime the wall first surely after investing in monies for tiles and what not just do it properly.

When you say prime the wall, what are you talking about? Pva?

Also does it need to be a flexible adhesive if it's going onto a brick wall?
SBR primer, and to the second point, I was thinking the same thing but the spec sheet does specifically state flexible.

I suspect they just said flexible for simplicity to cover themselves for walls and floors both.

Ok I'll return https://www.wickes.co.uk/Wickes-PVA-Admix-Building-Adhesive---5L/p/240701#

And replace with https://www.wickes.co.uk/KA-SBR-Bond-Co-Polymer-Bonding-Compound---1L/p/139061

And spend the extra £2 for Mapei Mapeker Rapid Set Flexible Tile Adhesive Grey 20kg.

At this rate I probably should have got the plasterer to do the boarding too. Doubt I've saved much and spent a lot more time.

Sorry this must be a different project. What are you boarding, and if boarding why do you need a plasterer?

Sorry, I hijaked this post a bit as I noticed the op say they were using the same backing boards for tiling. https://www.wickes.co.uk/STS-Professional-Tile-Backer-Board-1200-x-600-x-10mm/p/101131

I've stripped my downstairs toilet back to brick as it was previously studded and wasted space unnecessarily.
Plan on tiling the bottom and plastering the top half.
Figured I could use the backing boards dabbed and screwed to the bottom and plasterboard dabbed to the top. Then skimmed and tiled by professionals.

Just dab plasterboard over the lot, this is not a wet area no need for special boards assuming tile weight allows. Use tapered edge boards and just tape and fill the tapers, no need to plaster.

That really would be so much simpler! Was just worried about weight on walls where plasterboard is only dabbed to walls. It's only about 1.5m² of tiles on the largest wall though.

I ordered some of those washer things so could always pop a few of them in just in case.

Should I still use SBR to prime the surface before plasterboard adhesive dabbing?
