Okay lots of men on here so this must be a good place to ask, where the heck do you all buy your timber from? I've only got a Fiesta so can get about 1.8m in length but that's only in small pieces as thats from boot to dash. This limits me a lot in what I can carry but I still can't find anywhere decent to buy wood from.

We have a small DIY shop but the parking is horrific and they've tried to give me a few dodgy bits a couple of times. So is there a decent timber merchant online where I can get timber delivered (doesn't even need to be cut to size) at a reasonable cost? Or what should I be looking for localy as I'm seriously struggling :(

Look for a local sawmill and go speak to them direct. That's where I got the wood for my shed, a local sawmill.

Seems my local is just under 15 miles away, which is a long way to travel with a car full of timber. Plus I'm only looking at little projects so not sure it'd be worth their time :/

most decent wood yards will offer delivery, especially for longer lengths, although it may cost a few quid extra.

It's not like all wood is short lengths, we had timber delivered to us that was around 5m in length, there was no way that was coming home in a car lol

Mine was mostly delivered to be fair, but I did have a large amount.

It can't hurt to give them a call though if you figure out what you need first. If you are talking about enough to fill a car, it's not that small amount. And they will likely be able to deliver. As said, some lengths can be much longer, if you need them that size.

I live quite rurally though, so 15 miles is nothing to me. My local sawmill is 10 miles or so, and was happy going and asking for a few spare bits and pieces (not really spare, just to replace cuts I'd messed up), and they were happy to oblige. So long as you're not filling your car with bricks, I wouldn't worry about it.

Found out there is a Howarth Timber suppliers not to far and they offer delivery. They look like a decent sized company any experience?

Be careful when getting it delivered. You will end up with all the bowed and twisted wood out the yard that gets left when people go in to pick it up.
Happens everytime round here. They even admit it when you go in to complain :D

I fear this, the local place tries it even though I'm there!
I go and pick it up then I'm not delivered a load of spaghetti.

Can I borrow you and your Hilux :p

If I were >21 I'd just go and hire a van.

Think I'll hold off until I get a bigger car

Got a fantastic wood supplier less than a mile from me. I used to use the roof rack on the car. Had quite a lot on that over the years. Plus i have had wood delivered by them and it has always been top notch stuff.

Find somewhere where the 'trades' buy from. You will get a good deal there with quality materials.

I regularly carry 3.6m lengths in my Passat estate, looks like I'm on my way to a joust. Just give traffic light poles a wide berth and you'll be fine.

Yep, a decent sawmill though will allow you to exchange the really bowed ones but you then end up having to transport them back.

Really needs to be some regulation on the amount of bow and twist allowed for standard 2x4 etc. They could have a rejects pile for cheap.
