Time - BBC1

Wouldn't they not do random searches on POs? Looked way too easy.

It’s occasionally in the news, must be some serious dough involved to risk going from locking the cell, to being in one.

“Dozens of prison officers have been dismissed and some have been convicted for bringing prohibited items – which can include drugs, tobacco and mobile phones – into jails in England and Wales over the past five years, the Guardian can reveal.

Drug finds in jails rose by 18% this year and there have been claims that some prisons have seen similar levels of substance use during the coronavirus lockdown as before.

From 2015 up until 10 October this year, HM Prisons (HMP) dismissed 43 staff over prohibited items, and 187 outside staff not directly employed by HMP were banned from working in jails.

There were 88 subsequent convictions and 10 police cautions in addition to all those dismissed or banned, according to data released by the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) under the Freedom of Information Act.

This year alone, six HMP officers have been dismissed, 23 outside staff have been excluded, and there have been 12 convictions and one caution.

Further data from the MoJ shows that at least 22 of the officers dismissed from 2015 to 2020 had trafficked contraband, almost certainly to inmates or organised crime groups inside prisons.”

I watched part one last night, after my wife had gone to bed, (she can’t stand Sean Bean).
I found it so harrowing that I couldn’t watch part two, I felt impotent rage at Bean’s character’s inability to do anything about the guy who was stealing his food, and snatching the phone from him.
He was in a lose-lose situation, if he lashed out, he’d either get his *** kicked, or put on segregation, if he reported the bullying, he’d be labelled a grass and get it worse.
I lay in bed mulling it over, then got up around 04.15 and watched parts two and three.
Everyone who said that Sean Bean played a blinder got it right, he knocked it out of the park, even putting Stephen Graham ever so slightly in the shade, but only a bit.
I’m no TV critic, but everyone in “Time” acted convincingly.

I saw two episodes last night. Very good but as others said, it's quite unsettling to watch at times.

The prison chaplain is a beautiful lady, I never realised it was Siobhan Finneran from Rita, Sue and Bob Too.

Exactly, especially given the guy has set himself up as a nutter for throwing sugar water in someone's face! It's a tricky line to balance between standing up for yourself and risking other issues. Ultimately as someone who's a first timer too, you hear lots of horror stories which inevitably don't match up with reality and so there's the fear of what you expect to happen rather than the knowledge it probably wouldn't happen.

That water in the face scene is one I’ll remember for a long time. It was done so perfectly, and utterly shocking.

I also felt that whack from the pool balls in a sock!

BTW, if anyone’s remotely interested, which I doubt, it was filmed in Shrewsbury Prison, a very old prison which shut down in the early 2000’s and is now used for filming, tours and ghost hunts.

Ricky Tomlinson did 2 years in there in the 70’s for fighting on a picket line. Also held Donald Neilson, the Black Panther.

But the Black Panther is a prince from Wakanda?

Finished this today - tremendous TV and has left me pondering it for hours now.

Funny you say that, few weeks since I watched and think of it a lot. I guess it's natural to put yourself in his shoes and wonder how you would fair in the same circumstances.

I have a friend at the moment who's potentially facing 1/2 years in prison and he's fairly soft/easy going, I genuinely fear for him if he gets a custodial sentence.

Watched all three of these this evening, really well made and very interesting. It was an enjoyable but hard watch.

I binged it at the weekend. It's gritty but felt authentic. Was originally going to watch it with the Mrs but it would be too violent for her. Some of it was a hard watch but it's a good reminder of part of society most of us will never see. Sean Bean is seldom anything but excellent. He's done some great drama which is anchored in "real life". This one is also worth a watch if you enjoyed Time. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6078644/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_16

As an ex-screw myself, it was the best I've seen when it came to an authentic prison setting.

Sugar, cherryade and hot water was a big fave, shanks and bolos (pool balls in a sock), not so much but it did happen - tins of food were a good replacement as you could have a reasonable excuse for having lots of tins of tuna or beans to supplement meals.

I walked into metal detecting scanners daily but lots of prisons didn't have them for staff when I was in.
