Time Capsule

Whatever works best for you. Personally I'd stick it next to the router and cable it in. Take one ethernet cable from one of the lan ports on the router and plug it into the <.> port on the TC.

I'm in the Airport Utility. I have clicked on the internet icon at the top.

You said,

"Under wifi, I've got it setup as WPA2. Then under wireless options I've enabled the dual radios so I get 5ghz/2.4ghz for better throughput and no downspeeding when G devices connect.

This is all the config you should need to get your TC acting as an access point, with the fastest possible wifi speeds for your TC backups when you MacBook arrives. "

I have tabs for internet connection, TCP/IP/DHCP and NAT.

Where do I go for the first step you recommended?

Thanks.

Here you go:

I've got mine set manually, no DHCP so I know where it is. My router's DHCP range starts at 20, so the devices that I know won't change (or rather I don't want to change) all get statics under that range.

6 of one, half dozen of another though. Up to you.

You are, yep.

I disabled wifi on my home router as I was advertising 3 SSIDs which was a bit daft. Two from the TC and one from the router.

Once you've got that network setup, associate your machine to it and you should get an IP address through your TC from your router (fingers crossed).

Well I think I am connected. My TC has a green light, and I am currently connected to the internet through my new Apple TC.

Now with regards to using the disk, I enable file sharing, this is done.

Secure shared disks is"with device password". I am the only one using it.

Airport disks guest access is "not allowed".

I have given the workgroup a name.

What is the WINS Server?

Don't worry about the WINS server, you don't need that.

Green light on TC = good times btw, you're nearly there. :)

Check your PC is on the same workgroup, then try and map as I've mentioned above. Is your TC on DHCP or a static? That said Windows 7 just picked mine up automatically anyway.

Right click on My Computer, do properties. Then under the first tab, Computer Name - click change.

Here you can change your work group to what your TC is (it's probably set to WORKGROUP already) or change your TC to what your PC is. Don't worry this won't have any bearing on your Mac setup.

DHCP is fine. Mine is set like this:

Where IP address is in the lower part of the 192.168.1.x range I was talking about before, subnet mask is generally 255.255.255.0 for all home networks (gives you the full range for addressing). Router address is just that, normally .1. And the two DNS servers are dependent on what you use. I'm using OpenDNS and Google, but you can use your ISPs, or plumb your router's IP in there again.

I changed the name of my Windows workgroup and on Airport Utility. However, in Airport Utility I got an error saying this:

"An error occurred while trying to access the Apple wireless device. Make sure your network connection is valid and try again".

Still got a green light on the front of the TC?

Machine still connected to the access point off the TC?

Still able to get to the Internet?

Workgroup shouldn't make any difference to the authentication, I would expect that to be done using the Bonjour protocol (Apple's version of ZeroConf wifi).

Alas, I digress. Restart the Airport app, if that doesn't do it restart your PC.

Yes, yes, yes.

I will restart the airport utility.
