Time for a new smartphone, any ideas?

Under 5" there is only 1 real choice for a top end phone and that's the Z3 Compact. It's a stunning phone.

It was £240 a few weeks ago! Shop around, you should still be able to get it at a similar price somewhere.

I wish, if anyone spots it for around that price do let me know.

I found it at this price Linked removed, don't order from HK :p

BTW OcUK don't sell phones, so I'm assuming its ok to post this here? :p

Edit: I removed the link

I wouldn't touch simplyelectronics. I understand they are based in Hong Kong, though you'd think they were UK from their website, take ages, and don't necessarily supply EU products. They're often the cheapest.

Cheapest I can see from anywhere I'd trust is around £320, there were better deals at launch...

Ty, I only had a quick look out of curiosity. My dad is not in a rush, so I'm not currently looking for better deals since he still hasn't made up his mind what phone to get.

He uses the phone more than I do, so I'm not really forcing anything on him. It was him who said S5 as the current S3 mini is a bit slow for his day to day tasks. I'm persuading him towards Z3, but he's probably going to pick S5. I personally hate the Samsung UI and sony UI seems easier/simpler to use compared to Samsung's UI.

He's main criteria was; Screen size around 5inches (5.5inch is just stupid), Good battery life, good signal an decent camera.

So that's pretty much Sony Z3; 3100mAh battery, a screen still below 5.5inch and the camera from the reviews seems to be the best out of the range.

The Z3 and Z3 compacts are really good for sure. The water resistance and camera are their biggest advantages. I'm a huge Samsung fan and I'm with you about the Samsung's android but Sony has some problems with theirs having a bit of bloat-ware on it too but you're right it's a lot smoother (albeit without a physical home button which I love about Samsung phones).

Z3 compact is on offer quite a bit as people have said so I'd probably say that is your best bet.

Can I make another suggestion that might be worth looking at purely for value for money? The Honor 6 - £250, 5" 1080p (Z3 compact is only 720p), OCTA core processor, 3GB ram, 13MP camera, 3100mAh battery. It's Huawei which puts people off but they're actually a really good manufacturer and it's 4G enabled if you want to put a 4G sim in there (BT have mega cheap deals atm if you're with them on your TV)

Double the money

That's the point though we're explaining, some better than others:eek: that in answer to the question yes it is worth the money because it is better in every quantifiable variable.

Though for a good cheaper option the galaxy Alpha always seems to do very well in benchmarks and it looks great performs well in various comparison vids I've watched.

He would go for the Z3, my dad said that Z3C is too small for him. The Z3 screen is 5.2inch I think, so its still a reasonable size.

The Honor 6 camera takes really nice pictures, some samples I got from THIS article.

Yeah the Honor 6 is actually really impressive and with that processor it'll be super fast. Plus it's over £200 cheaper than the Z3 with very similar specs. Just an options though of course he may want to stick with a more well known manufacturer. I was actually gonna mention the OnePlus One but that's 5.5inch so not suitable.

Better in every way, agreed, but I still don't think that makes it worth double the price. Some aren't huge improvements or even that necessary, I don't think many people will really notice the improved pixel density, but it sounds good from a marketing point of view.

Some of the improvements are subjective, such as design (though its nice that they've finally managed to design a decent looking phone), as for more storage options, I think many people would rather have the removable storage option.

Anyway, each to their own, I'm sure the price will drop to something a bit more shortly after launch.

So pretty much from my point of view its not worth it, some of the things listed before for me are a disadvantage; glass, non-removable battery, no sd-card slot etc.

I don't really trust OPO, my friend has it and he had some issues with which I helped him to get rid of. The size like you mentioned is also not really reasonable to use the phone in one hand comfortably, I'm still going to do some research on this phone. I mean pretty much everything is made in China or Korea, even my Nexus 5 was made in Korea. I'll show him that phone later and see what are his thoughts on it.

Thanks for another suggestion! :)

@IC3 yup I agree with most of your points but it's effectively the same price as any flagship release £507 amazon.de £530 o2 refresh in certain parameters, obviously the sharks will attempt to keep prices high for a month or two, I'll be surprised if by the end of May it's not commonly £500 in the UK.

Yes that's correct, all manufactures with the well known models such as the galaxy S2, 3, 4, 5+ or Z1, Z2, Z3 and HTC ONE M7, M8, M9 compete witch each other on the market, its understandable that their price will be fairly similar. Lets be honest, most people don't give a single F about the real performance of the phone compared to a different one, they just want something good looking with some new features to play around with. I'm not that type of person who gets carried away by new tech and I don't usually feel the need to pay double due to marketing BS. That's why for someone whose looking at getting a Samsung which is a good bang for the buck, I'd say go for the S5. I haven't checked how S4 compares to S5, but if I had an S4 I wouldn't upgrade to S5 neither if I had an S3. But I hate Samsung's UI and as soon as I would have the phone it would receive a clean 4.4.4 kitkat without all that crap you get on stock ROM...

My dad is not stubborn on the manufactures, as he himself can see that today most of the time you pay for the brand/logo. But underneath all the phones are pretty much the same, I personally never ran any of my phones stock for longer than 6 months :p

Edit

BTW I also hate the new fashion/race of who has a bigger screen with bigger res. Its a smartphone, you only need 1080p atm. Why not try to make a good smartphone with a 4.95-5inch screen that has a 3200-3800mAh battery, instead they give you a bigger screen with bigger res which halves your smartphones battery life...

Edit2

The Sony Z3C is currently £299 at GiffGaff

Edit3

What about Xiaomi do they have any interesting phones that meet the criteria?

A mate bought his gf a xiaomi copy of an s4 for £89 with 2 free cases, she's had it for months so I presume it's ok though I doubt she'd complain if it wasn't.

Galaxy Alpha £289 at mobilephones direct.

Do you know what model?

BTW I just had a word with my dad and I misheard him for the first time, he said that the screen size can be around 5inches or larger. So there's no limit as to what screen size :p

Ooh, thanks for that. Pretty tempted as it seems a fair price, though as it was £240 with O2 recently it makes me wonder if there could be better offers if I'm patient. Looks like Giffgaff just reduced it as they had it on for about £350 yesterday.

Np, I've sent you a link with a better price from the rainforest, not sure if I can post it as they have competitive products that OcUK sell...

Here's a good price comparison site includes contracts payg and sim free now that the size criteria has changed.

I'll ask my mate later re the xiaomi.

Ty, my dad is most likely going to buy the phone and get a 3g goodybag from GiffGaff, the 4G is non-existent where I live haha :p Buying the device and picking a giffgaff goodybag seems like a better thing to do, wouldn't you agree?
