Time for another upgrade I think.

GPU is still going strong but the processor is starting to show signs it needs to be replaced.

Have got some ideas of what I want to do but I would appreciate a recommendation on the best combination of the following...

I am on a tight budget but want to get this lump of components out of the way so I can upgrade the rest as I go. I need to keep it future proof but bring the budget down as much as possible.

Also I was on call all last night so I may have missed something stupid and not realised

Any ideas to bring the budget down but keep a similar level of performance is welcome:

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £997.51 (includes shipping: £14.10)

Naturally the other components I already have. Main HDD is still ok so will be retained as my main storage drive in slave to the new SSD.

Also I know i Have wasted a little money on the hydro cooler but I will keep this as is or similar as changing to an AIO on my current made it 100% quieter and my missus who is an overworked nurse really appreciated that :)

I'd just get a 1700 and overclock it, then put the saved money towards getting 16gb of ram. Could get by with 600w psu, the rx 480 doesnt use that much power

As above a Ryzen 1700 will normally be fine on the stock cooler at 3.7ghz overclock, it is a decent enough cpu cooler. The AM4 socket is supported for the two future generations of a Ryzen so allows future upgrades. Getting a Ryzen 1600 would save you further money.

Then spend the money saved to get some good 3200 c14 Bdie based ram like the 8 pack 3200 2 x 8gb. When I had 16gb it ran at 3466c15 which helps Ryzen performance as it is linked to memory speed. 2133 memory would impact performance, check web for examples of tests.

With my rx480 at 1080p I get 100-144fps (limited to max monitor refresh rate), cpu averages about 30% in game and max of a little over 40%.

What is the pc being used for ?

You want faster ram for Ryzen. Go with a 3000MHz kit or above.

No need for the extra thermal paste.

As mentioned above, the R7 1700 would save some money. If you are just gaming then the R5 1600 is also another cheaper option.

I would swap windows for the usb version. That case doesn't have an optical drive bay.

You can easily go with a cheaper cooler such as a Cryorig H7. Also no need for an 800W psu. I would lok at something like the Seasonic Focus Gold 550W.

No bay isn't an issue ive got some USB CD and BluRay drives at home. Being stingy saving a few £ for the disc version.

If I opt for something more impressive what are your thoughts on temporarily utilising my existing PSU? Its an old non modular 750w unit and seems to be doing ok. It has been going since 2010.

Also what is the most cost effective Ryzen compatible ram.

If I spend some more on the build I would have to do it in stages.

My Latest attempt but still out of my budget.

I know the case is expensive but its one of the only I like.

If any one can suggest a cheaper similar case I'm all ears.

Some caveats:

I could go Midi Again but ill be honest my current Midi with even just a 480 it is cramped and needs a bit more space for the heat to have a nice convection channel. Tends to pool at the bottom and bump the GPU temps up even with an extract on the side.

If i can get similar performance and get the overall down to around 800 that would be ideal (realise this is a tall order)

PC will be gaming and some editing (nothing major), with the editing it isn't stressed for time and the current GPU will cut it until I can save for better.

Will the PSU above support future SLI/Crossfire upgrades?

Any further advice appreciated, I have been out of the tech loop for a while when it comes to hardware.

These cases that you choose, both have relatively short VGA clearance, the InWin 350mm, the Thermaltake even worse, only 310mm.

I gave you a case with 390mm VGA clearance.

underbudget, but would be a capable gaming build (get windows elsewhere with the rest of the budget - ocuk prices aren't competitive)
went with a 500gb ssd instead, the size increase would be appreciable :) nvme ssds aren't worth it unless you're constantly trashing the drive (eg for video editing)

You did kind sir, much cheaper. I'm looking at style over substance if I'm honest :D

The Kolink Punisher is a very high design execution. It has style - smooth curves, place for your Blu-Ray ROM, window and black colour.

How many GPU's are over 350mm long ? Also the Thermaltake case can take a 410mm gpu if you take out one of the HDD bays. So not really an issue.
