Afternoon all,

Just a quick question about time machine/time capsule... Has anybody had the pleasure of using it at any great length yet?

Does the time capsule integrate as seamlessley as apple say it does??

I'm seriously considering purchasing one of these this week, so would like to hear peoples views.

Cheers,

Tom :)

I was thinking about getting one as well. But then i though about it and i already have a wireless router so i though i may as well just get a NAS hard drive. But then i though i could just upgrade the hard drive in my MacBook. Then i stopped thinking and started doing some work!

lol ^^

Unless they bring a version out with an ADSL modem built in then i wont be getting one.

I can't see them doing this any time soon because they would be leaving out the cable side of the market.

I'm having so many problems with my Netgear router at the moment I'm considering selling my WD External HDD and Router and getting a Timecapsule and a really simple BB modem.

Let the Timecapsule provide the wireless network and let the modem worry about being a modem.

I can't actually afford any of this right now so it's all hypothetical but it is the plan for the future.

This is the killer thing for me as well. The benefit of the time capsule would be that it can store all my data, manage my wireless, and connect to the internet all in one beautiful little box.

If i have to have two boxes i might as well keep my current router and get a NAS drive, which will work out a lot cheaper.

This is why I like the layout of my house;

I have the ADSL modem in the bedroom, and the access point in the kitchen/living room.

I connect wirelessly to my AirPort Extreme which has a (printer connected), and the Speedtouch Modem handles the IP distribution without any hastle.

Admittedly, if I had to have them side-by-side then it'd put a downer on things :o

What size did you go for MrMoonX? The 1TB would be good for a shared iTunes library/backup situation.

i went for the 500gb one as 1tb is a bit much, but considering my itunes library is growing i might move this from the macbook to the Time Capsule in due course, its actually fixed all the wireless problems I was having now 5 days uptime without a drop out however if i put the timecapsule in B/G mode the macbook drops out so I think apple need to sort this once and for all asap

I ordered one the evening they were released but soon cancelled my order. Ended up running FreeNAS on an old PC so it is a NAS and used it for time machine. I formatted it now and use it as general storage.

Have you tried using Channel 1 on your router?

Apparently having the Time Capsule / AirPort Extreme / Router channel set to "automatic" is the problem. It scans the area for unused channels and uses that.. of course, it will occassionally bump in to a neighbours signal and freaks out.

Basically the problem is interference on existing channels, NOT hardware.

Try using a program like Stumbler that can find the Wi-Fi networks in your area, and use a channel that is not commonly used :)

Good tip never thought of that, ill give that a try myself and see if it improves my signal a little bit.

It doesn't include a Cable modem though either does it? I thought the whole idea was that there is no modem in it at all so it can be used by both cable and ADSL users without needing two versions with different modems built in. They just assume you will buy the modem that you need and connect it to the Time Capsule.

I'm going to give EVH's suggestion a go to see if it fixes my Netgear problem. Cheers for that.

Remember, Channel 11 is the default for almost all routers.

Using Channel 1 or 6 is likely going to yield better results than say going from 11 to 9.

Round here it's usually 6, then again 90% of the neighbours also use Sky! I changed mine to 1 a few months back and it's lot more reliable than it was. Only downside to a US Mac - less wireless channels :(

That said 1,6,11 are the only non-overlapping channels on B/G IIRC.

Correct, that's why I suggested trying channels 1 or 6

I can't log in to my AirPort Extreme to change mine (no Mac), but I know I need to, just so the network from my parents house isn't conflicting.

Is it just me, or is it if you look at the time capsule thing is actually a cracking feature set for the price?

WiFi AP.
500-1Tb.
Gigabit switch.

Even just looking at those features, having all those in one product, for that price, seems cheap to me?

I am planning to get one, along with a mac mini for elgato tv3 and a macbook pro.

I can back both machines upto the Time Capsule as well as using it as the wireless connection for my iPhone and an AppleTV in the other room.

I am really beginnging to regret buying this iPhone as costing me a fortune switching to apple kit from pc's.
