Time Machine / Time Capsule...any takers?

I am planning to get one, along with a mac mini for elgato tv3 and a macbook pro.

I can back both machines upto the Time Capsule as well as using it as the wireless connection for my iPhone and an AppleTV in the other room.

I am really beginnging to regret buying this iPhone as costing me a fortune switching to apple kit from pc's.
Why? because of the cost of the kit, or the addictive nature of the products? :D

tbh.. I would love to have one but the only place I could put it which is in the hall there are only 2 plug sockets and no room for an extension lead, the hose phone and wireless router are both plugged in already.

I could put it in my room but then the rest of the house would get a bad signal so men!

(sorry for any spelling mistakes I'm on my iTouch):p

Is it just me, or is it if you look at the time capsule thing is actually a cracking feature set for the price?

WiFi AP.
500-1Tb.
Gigabit switch.

Even just looking at those features, having all those in one product, for that price, seems cheap to me?

Yeah the Time Capsules are certainly nice, but having to run an ADSL Modem alongside is annoying.

But certainly no different than any other NAS.
Infact, if you think about it, theres at least 1 less device to have in your network with the Time Capsule. And in most cases, 2 less devices.

I'm with you on this BoomAM.

If I didn't have an AirPort Extreme already then this would be on my to-buy list :)

The 1TB option is a bit pricey, but then if you have multiple Macs then it's a no-brainer.

If it wasnt for the fact that drivers have to be installed on Windows machines for it to work, i would get one.

Yeah, dunno if it's related but the Bonjour drivers on Windows SUCK!

I can print fine from the mrs' Vista laptop, but ONLY once.. if I go and print something else it will get stuck in it's own queue until IT feels like printing! haha, it's amusing.

What's better.. if I print something from my Mac (R.I.P) then it jumps the queue and comes right out.

I've even turned off the Windows box and it'll just print out 10 minutes later.. a few times it's just not come out at all.

I want the Time Capsule, but I can't sell my AirPort Extreme because of the mrs'

Lol.
Tbh, with the right bits of kit, something that does far more than the capsule could be made from scratch.
It just wouldnt look as good. :p.

But at the moment they are leaving out the ADSL side.. they could just bring out another version, they don't have to stop selling the current one.

The reason it's like that is that in the US, apparently ISPs don't tend to give away free modem/router jobbies like we do over here, and cable is much more common than ADSL - so pretty much everyone buys a cable modem, making the Time Capsule/Airport Extreme more useful over there. Same with the iPhone, didn't have any 3G because the 3G network in the US is a bit on the non-existent side.

Shame really.
Imagine how good some of their products could have been.
Imagine how good the iPhone could have been. It could have been hands down the best phone in the world bar none if Apple took notice of Europe/UK.

Why is everybody whining about having to have a xDSL/Cable Modem as well as a Time Capsule. Just hide the modem/router away somewhere and have the beautiful Time Capsule on display.

Integrating a modem would make the device more expensive, larger and more prone to failure.

I have to have a Virgin Media cable modem as well as my Linsys wireless and I have the cable modem hidden away. Job done!

Thanks for the replies folks..

I've ordered one - so there is no going back now!

I agree - from what I've read elsewhere, and here the adsl/cable etc issue seems to be a bit of a non starter for me..

As above ^ just hide it away..

I think apple have to concede that some people will have adsl, and others cable so to implement any kind of solution would require some quite innovative hardware (which they specialise in) but I dont think the necessity is there..

On the upside, I've just been informed I can attach a drive to my homehub so i may try that over the weekend..

Either way, the time capsule is winging its way... and I'm looking forward to decluttering my desk..

Tom :)
