Hello,

6 years ago with the help of some friends at uni I built my first and only PC. It still works fine (it turns on/off and i can go on the net) and my other half can play WOW at rather rubbish settings with some huge lag spikes if you do scary things like try and move... At the time it was mid ranged I believe, AMD athlon 64 3200+ (2.21GHz) and 1.5GB RAM, a 7600GT. 2 years ago it got a new power supply as the previous went POP.

I currently use a DELL XPS 1530 Laptop as my machine, which in the last year has had 5 hardware replacements under warranty. When it works its quite nice, but mobo/gfx x2, screen x1, dvd drive x1 and HDD x1 in 12 months screams cheap components. Its a Core 2 Duo T8300 2.4ghz, 3gb Ram, and a 8600mGT. On the laptop i can play modern warfare 2 and suchlike quite reasonably.

the wife has requested that i get a PC that i can mess around on and not have to sit at the kitchen table on the laptop. My budget is £500 +/- 75 ish.
For that i need PC and windows 7. I have an old 17 Inch Samsung LCD screen, that i will replace when i have more money.

I currently have that would be usable, a Coolermaster CENTURION case in silver, and a HIPER 530w type M power supply. I know the PSU is a pants make, the case is ok though. Id rather get a new case, but for the sake of a better PC I will live with it for now.

The PC will be used by myself to play games, and do some odd CAD work but not very often. I play a mixture of FPS games with the odd RTS thrown in.

I had a quick go at a system, but was wondering what you guys thought.

*OVERCLOCKED* AMD Phenom II X2 Dual Core 550 3.10GHz @ 3.60GHz / Gigabyte GA-MA770T-UD3P Motherboard / Corsair Dominator 4GB DDR3 XMS3 PC2-1600C9 (2x2GB) Bundle £279.99

Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card + Colin McRae Dirt 2 Full Game £119.98

Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium - Retail (Full Version) £79.99

Samsung SpinPoint F1 320GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (HD322HJ) £34.99

Samsung SH-S223C/BEBE 22x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM £18.99

with shipping that comes to £533.95

thats without case/psu... so i would like to save a little if possible.

the reason the overclocked bundle is included and not individually is the extra cost is only about 10-15 pounds and saves me time.

top end of your budget but includes new case and psu too

basket-9.png

That doesnt include an aftermarket cooler though, if you want to OC as with the bundle above youd prob have to set aside 20 for that, but buying these components individually is saving you over £50 from the bundle

save some money but not getting a bundle and put something like this together

AMD Phenom II X2 Dual Core 550 3.10GHz Black Edition (Socket AM3) - Retail + Colin McRae Dirt 2 Full Game

OCZ Obsidian 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 Dual Channel (OCZ3OB1600LV4GK)

Asus M4A785TD-V Evo AMD 785G (Socket AM3) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard

comes £221.97

just out of interest the AMD Phenom II X2 Dual Core 550 3.10GHz Black Edition (Socket AM3) CPU is that what i should be looking at for the budget?

the phenom is a good all round cpu for games, will more then likely overclock to 3.6-3.8 with some good cooling. If overclocking is not your thing just get

AMD Athlon II X2 Dual Core 245 2.90GHz (Socket AM3) - Retail You can still bump that up to 3.4+ which will be fine and you can see you save a fair bit of cash from the phenom

Thanks for the replys. Having thought about it and not really knowing much about it, what would be the best option for learning to OC on? Seems like something I would like to try, and if i am totally honest wouldnt know where to start...

And the other question was, if i spent more on a CPU and Motherboard with onboard gfx, and then saved and perhaps after christmas bought a 5770, would the machine be able to run any games? i know it wouldnt look good.

finally is the Coolermaster Sileo 500 Silent Case - Black (500w Extreme Power Plus PSU) at £80 worth it, or is it worth spending a bit more and getting different case/psu?

I'd try to steer away from samsung F1's because it's been reported that they have reliability issues. You could also get a 5750 unless you want to play at high resolutions with very high settings

Only £10 more and it has a better GPU and memory.

Best I could do in a few minutes

Thanks for everyones replys, sort of changing the criteria a bit. I was looking at some other websites, and for £350 delivered you can get a:

AMD Quad Core Phenom II X4 965
2 x 2Gb PC-10666 Memory -1333Mhz - Generic NON BRANDED.
ATX Black Gaming Tower Case
750w ATX Power Supply
AMD 770 and SB710 Chipset Motherboard - 770-C45.

I know the RAM and the Power Supply are slight cause for concern, BUT they come with a 3 year warranty and would be things I looked to upgrade. Can I get near matching that spec on OC? Then for approx £260-270 i can get everything else required including a 5770. That system would bring me in at between £610-620. £35 over budget. Is it worth doing?

The reason is i saw the pay in 6/12 month option, which suits me great meaning i could increase my budget to £600 +/- 30 and then think about getting a cheap monitor £100 ish. total of say £750 for both.

any ideas? and thanks in advance. OH and i like the idea of being able to o/c a little and would like if possible some stuff that is sort of future proof, even if thats not the mobo/cpu.

Hey just built the following spec for just over 800 so its overbudget. Is it worth it? or should i go bang on budget for a phenom x4 965. For futureproofing which is better and can i play around more with trying to OC. Will i notice much difference in gaming? Oh and will the PSU with the case be powerful enough?

Hi
PSU and case will be fine
You can either go with that last build you did, very good, or for the AMD look at the first spec I did but sub in the quad core 955 for the dual core 550 and youre in the same ball park, both in terms of cost and performance. Upto you which system you'd prefer
