Time to call it day ? PC gaming !

If so many games crash something is seriously wrong with your pc, it sounds like a driver problem have you tried uninstalling the drivers then using driver cleaner and reinstalling.

Do the games run ok when not using crossfire.

Games shouldn't be crashing so much.

You'd get better performance with an Intel CPU clocked but is it really worth spending another couple of hundred to do so?

only a few crash allot , stalker and oblivion, the main issues i get are big slow down issues and stutter, like i'd be running along at 60fps then drops to 5-10 fps stand still for a bit and it will be ok, when i check if all my cores a being used in games that are supposed to support it, only one core is being used.

i tried installing on a seperate normal hdd, etc paging file on/off ganged/unganged memory, disabling crossfire , turning all settings in ati to performance, one thing i was curious about was my mobo only supports x8x8 pci-e would that be causing such a performance hit/bottleneck it would cause the problems i'm getting in game (if so then it looks like i may have to go the intel route like some have suggested)

windows never crashes or has any issues, i never get bsod or lockups

Try running with just a single card for a bit so you can eliminate whether or not crossfire is the source of your problems.

Oblivion should run absolutely maxed on just a single 4870 without any issues.

The reason i never went to intel is i already had a good motherboard that supported phenom cpu’s so i bought a 9950 black edition

Performance wise AMD haven't been ahead of the game since socket 939.

Unless you're a serious enthusiast you'd be hard pushed to notice the real world performance differences though.

I'd have thought that the differences were more pronounced when using a crossfire setup though?

Avatar, don't throw more money at the problem.

First thing to try is cut back to basics - just one card, and only use two memory sticks.

If that seems to work, then first try adding the extra memory (even though you really don't need it). If things are still ok, then try adding the other card. Of course, if cutting back to basics still leaves you with crashing, then theres a lot more trouble shooting to do.

Couple questions: Are you using the latest BIOS for your mother board? Also, what motherboard is it exactly? What version windows you using?

Problem with buying a whole bunch of new pc components and throwing it all together is that if there is one small thing wrong somewhere it can make it all seem like a waste of money.

don't worry, your not the only one who gets SHOCKING performance from STALKER clear sky, runs so badly here i can't even bare to bother with it anymore, hell it runs badly at 1280*1024 FFS and its patched to latest version  just accept the fact STALKER is a load of rubbish and move on

its a gigabyte Gigabyte GA-MA790X-DS4 AMD 790X with the v5 bios on.

thanks i'll try the crossfire and ram thing, do i have to take one card out or just disable it in the drivers.

what about the mobo only supporting x8x8 in pci-e does it need to do x16x16

Remove the 2nd card completely. Will have a look at specs of your mobo to answer questions on that.

Edit: I seee your mobo has PCI-E 2.0, so running the cards at 8x might have a little impact on performance, but it shouldn't be very much at all, so long as both defo running at 8x.

I just remembered reading on a forum somewhere not long ago where someone was having slow performance on a AMD system, and that when he looked at his hypertransport speed settings in BIOS or manually set them to what they should be his performance came in line with what it should have been.

Now, I can't remember the forum and I am not familiar with AMD systems at the moment, so I am not sure where in the BIOS you would find the hyper transport settings, or indeed what the proper speed is that it should be running, but I am sure someone here will know - if they can stop being morons and try being helpful (not all of you obviously :) )

if you wanted a pc for gaming you should have got a dual core
clear shy wont be very good until they patch the hell out of it

The first real answer to the problem.
