Time to call it day ? PC gaming !

clearly he didnt think the upgrade throu.

I know if i throw money at it, it might run quicker....

To the OP, with the system in my rig at stock, games really didn't run great. One thing you have to remember with crossfire is added cpu overhead. Once the Q6600 was clocked to 3.2, it was like a new machine altogether.

You machine is going to be horribly CPU limited if you are running at stock. This could have been avoided by doing some research or asking people on here prior to purchase.

It's a pity that you are not happy, and I can imagine you must be pretty annoyed. I bet if you took out one of those 4870's you would see fairly similar performance to what you are getting now.

Also, don't **** your system off based on one game sperformance. Especially Clear Sky, which not only yourself, but many other people have been having issues with. Try firing up a Valve game, or something like COD4, upping every setting and then realise what a well made game should run like.

I have a 360 in addition to my pc in sig, and while I thought it would replace my pc for gaming, the two now co-exist quite nicely. PC gaming is still good - it's only your choice of CPU holding you back.

Edit: Oh, and when I put 8GB in my system it felt sluggish/not quite right so stuck with my old 4GB. Try just using 4GB.

Why on earth did you buy a phenom?

The only time I'd go the AMD cpu route at the moment would be when I'd gone temporarily insane.

And this is from someone that up until my latest 2 PC builds had used only AMD processors when purchasing PCs.

I loved my old PC it lasted me years, with a good old Athlon XP 2400, though after reading about how pants latest AMD CPU's are, I went to Intel.

Do your research before buying!

Indeed. I loved the whole Athlon line, right up to the Athlon64X2. Intel has pulled quite far ahead these days though, and I don't have any brand loyalty - whatever is best for cheapest is the route I go :)

most other games crash or don't support crossfire or quad core cpu's.

spec wise which is the one to get ps3 xbox 360 i aint bothered about blu ray just best spec, must support 1080p due to my screen size.

also are any new consoles due soon.

maybe you should have asked in console forums.......btw when u say most other games crash how many games are we talking ?

OP, are you using one or two crossfire bridges? Also, what drivers are you using currently? And ahve you tried seeing if you experience crashes with just one card?

Also, if you are in fact overclocking already, have you tried running at stock? I for some reason just assumed you were running stock....

have you tried throwing more money at your PC?

might work, you never know..

Aye brand loyalty is a dodgy thing to do. also research items before you buy em. Its the safeist thing to do. You wouldnt just go out and buy the first car you saw and go yep that will do. You research different cars etc...

I dont quite understand everyones saying 8gb ram is bad ?!? maybe cuz im running vista 64 mine all gets utilized but. I saw a increase when i added the extra 4gb ram to my machine

Bit of a dodgy comparison, but just because you're a fan of McDonalds, doesnt mean you will enjoy everything on their menu! :D

You don't need to spend 1000s on a pc to enjoy PC gaming.

I have never spent more than £130 on any single piece of hardware (except monitor).

I only ever max out older games but I still enjoy new games that run fine at medium settings. If I had spent as much as you I might get a bit frustrated though :P

I tried 360 gaming for about 3 weeks then got rid of it, couldn't bare all the kiddies, long loading times and crap quality hardware.

The only game I would want a console for is FIFa 09 but thats only one game so not worth it.

just a moan really, recently i spent about £1000 on upgrades to my pc, Phenom 9950 , 8gb ram 2 4870 cards in crossfire, 1000w psu, all watercoled and the games still play like crap.

example.

these type of threads cheer me up, thousands of pounds spent on a gaming rig , playing a game that is notorious for its bugs and problems and high spec requirements, then considering a console to solve it ...

games are not about the graphics, if theres no hook or gameplay no amount of garnish will make it worth it.. a costly mistake you seem to have made

The reason i never went to intel is i already had a good motherboard that supported phenom cpu’s so i bought a 9950 black edition, and reading the reviews / prices etc (my phenom was £120 inc vat) there was not a massive amount of performance difference in real terms, i got watercooling due to the idle temps of the ati 4870 being so high, i’d rather have less noise and lower temps.
I have both crossfire bridges on, my pc is stock speeds no overclocking, latest 8.8 ati driver vista 64bit.
I got other stuff for my money but never listed it all, 2 60gb ocz v2 hard drives.

ffallic so would going the intel route you mentioned be a good boost?

thanks for your replies btw even the the non helpful ones
