Hi guys,

Would I be a fool to drop my i7 [email protected], mobo, and ram today in favour of an OCUK 8700K bundle?

When I am playing Battlefield 1 (daily!), I really notice my frame-rates all over the place 64 player matches and im keen to try out the new 8700K, but at the same time Im thinking maybe I should wait for Icelake next year.... I am finding the decision quite agonising to be honest.

It is only Bf1 that seems to make my rig sweat, every other game keeps consitantly high frame-rates (I am running a 165hz 1440p G-sync monitor and like to keep them as high as possible)

To be clear I cant afford to do another upgrade for at least 5 years after this one so it really has to last me a long time when I do upgrade.

I appreciate your input!

The answer is simple , is Battlefield 1 worth spending £500+ to play ? Personally i wouldn't do it, BF1 is a good game but i certainly wouldn't upgrade my entire platform over it. I would wait until next year if i were you.

Don't get me wrong, BF1 still runs very well - I just know it could be that bit smoother still!

I know you're right though, I'd probably be really pleased I waited when Icelake comes out..

Apart from some minor hickups, the current rig still serves you well I presume. So your best move would be to wait for the next gen chips, current coffeelake is just a more cores version of kabylake.

I was thinking to upgrade my pc, yeah I really want the 8700k but I wouldnt really make use of it, as I sometimes play games and I haven't got a fast enough reaction time to play meny fps games anymore

So just upgrading my pc for the sake of it, is just throwing money away, if Im not going to see much or any improvement.. I think I will leave it for now, maybe even a few years, then I will see a larger improvement for my money, plus my pc is running very nicely atm,,,, Why fix it, if its not broke.

4770k is still very capable. keep it wait. you cant compare a 2500k with a 4770k ocd.its not even close.

I'd say a 4770k isn't too far behind a 7700k.

Unless you specifically need the extra cores I'd stick with what you have.

For gaming you won't see much improvement other than maybe a little with BF1.

If all you do is play BF1 and have money to burn then it may be worth it to you.

While that looks an impressive gain, if you look at the FPS figures and lets be honest thats what 99% of people are going to be interested in, there is relatively zero gain, most likely to being GPU bound, but the CPU figures are very good, but you are adding 50% more cores so you would expect to see that.

If you check Phage link above, he has a Timespy score for a Ryzen with a 1080ti against a 4770k and a 1080ti and the Ryzen also beats it handily in Timespy benches.

Id say for OP if you went with a Ryzen or a 8700K you wouldnt be disappointed in scenarios where your CPU is doing the work, in areas where your GPU is limiting you, then your CPU is going to be largely irrelevant.

Im in the same scenario actually, i have a 4770k @ 4.3ghz, im 99% sure im going with Ryzen as i already have a CH6 mobo, DDR4 Ram and NVME etc waiting to go in it. Im holding off as im refurbishing a property and also hoping to see if theres a Zen refresh early next year, also looks like Partner Vega customs will be along soon so willl probably jump on one of those too. But while i have the "Itch" to upgrade, i dont think its going to be too noticeable for me, more of a placebo upgrade but im ok with that.

Id say for OP, unless your playing stuff thats hammering your CPU then stay where you are for now, if its hammering your CPU look to see if adding more cores overall or adding just a couple more faster cores is going to give you the biggest benefit...

More Cores Total = Ryzen
A Few more Cores but higher IPC = 8700k.

Fairly certain some games will gobble up as many cores as you can lob at them, some are limited to xxx amount of cores max. Also if you stream or do other stuff while gaming, like encoding videos or whatever, then AMD is going to be the better option imho.

I agree with you to an extent - but you get performance benefits in areas other than FPS - eg. more stable frame times

I would stick with what you have - AMD and Intel will be refreshing their ranges over the next 12 months to 18 months with newer models. Ryzen is the first version of the new AMD uarch,so future ones will have improvements in clockspeed, and certainly other areas, and Intel will eventually get to 10NM and launch CPUs with updated cores too. The other consideration is whether the newer CPUs will launch with platforms supporting PCI-E 4.0 and other newer features.

If you were on an older CPU,it might be worth upgrading, but Haswell is still very solid even now,IMHO OFC.

Yeah Ryzen and CoffeeMaker are great CPU's but don't make the most compelling upgrades from a 4 core 8 thread i7 for playing games all things considered.

I'd agree mostly with the above, but I'm happy with my 8700k upgrade from a 4670k. To be honest, I can't see there being a massive difference between this current chip and the next generation and I expect my new rig to last me 5 years at least. Heaven bench mark went from 3,400 points to just over 4,000 on a 1080ti so my system was holding the gpu back. Games do seem smoother although it's not a huge difference, but I know that the next GPU I buy won't be held back and I should get another big boost.

nope i suggest to wait till ice lake more cpus to choose from z390 there will be 8 c 16t cpu on that , 6c 12t more choice , longer life of socket hopefully .

I'm still struggling to think of a reason to upgrade my 2600k @4.6GHz tbh, granted I don't play battlefield 1 or anything multiplayer, but I've been playing Crysis at 100fps on full quality for example.
