Time to try Western Digital?

Got my drive and am very impressed with it so far.

Actually very quiet and quiet cool.

Did a quick benchmark using CrystalDiskMark compared to my Samsung F3, and was surprised to see that the WD was much quicker in all read tests, but slower in write operations?

Not that it really matters since they both seem to be fast drives.

got 3 WD blacks currently running in my WHS right now and one that has just been returned, sadly you do get hdd failures but WD are fantastic about sending out new drives etc ! only had 1 drive fail out of a total of 10 WD but you get them either way regardless of the company

but Id still recommend the WD Blacks or if you have the money the R5's haha

Interesting thread, as all the hard drives I have in my systems are either Samsung or Western Digital drives.

Score on the board for failues so far:

WD 2 : Samsung 1

Thats out of about 10 drives. I must point out that the Samsung failure was even my own fault (plugged it into a Hotswap bay that was killing hard drives electrically).

What I can say though is both RMA services are very good - Samsung even turned around my replacement drive same day it arrived, for a total of a 3 day turn around! Western Digital are more like 5-6 days.

It horses for courses I guess. I'm buying my next batch of 4x 500GB drives at the end of the month, and I'll be picking up the Samsung F3's...

I have always liked WD drives, not seen many die before, just got one for my laptop. I have a Samsung F3 in this pc though, it's fast and quiet, and *touch wood* has been very reliable.

I have the SF3 1TB 32MB and a WDCB 1TB 32MB, tested mine last night.

The WDCB is practically empty and was tested on an empty 900GB partition (the other partition has an OS on it but the same speeds are returned for that too). The F3 is my C: drive with one partition and is about 1/4 full.

Top two are SF3, Bottom two are WDCB.

The F3 is better at sequential while the Black is better at random.

Some interesting stuff here. From what I can see, there doesn't seem to be much in it either way.

I do think that I was a little unlucky with my Samsung drives and wouldn't expect that kind of failure rate if I kept buying them.

Having said that, the WD drive is no where near as loud as I thought it would be, and as we have seen it definitely on par for performance.

Anyway, this is what I got when comparing mine:

Samsung F3 1Tb, has my system on it -

And my empty WD Caviar Black 1Tb -
