Tip

tips should be for outstanding service , something above and beyond the call of duty.
tipping anything else degrades the quality of service and as you said they get paid for that. If it wasn't for perpetual tippers the service quality in the UK would be far far higher.

Pretty much sums up my thoughts on the subject lol. My sister has a second job as a waitress in a local bar/sit down meal place and she gets tips regularly but not from everyone. She never asks as thats rude in her and my opinion but just ensures that the customer enjoys their meal and time at the establishment whilst being under her service.

I can see why some people do ask for tips though as some of the minimum wages are appauling in some of the places I've had friends work for lol

Me: "Can I pay by card"
Him, as he hands me the card reader: "Sure. Any tip today?"
Me: "No, thank you."
Him: "Are you sure?"
Me: "Pretty sure."

I paid for the food and left.

What are your thoughts on "tips"?

If I was intending to tip someone and then they asked that, they'd get nothing the cheeky buggers.

I was at a restaurant the other day...paid the amount and gave a 12% tip. Some random waitress, not even the person serving me had the audacity to come over and explain to me that expected tip was between 15-18%. So I removed some money. *****!

 Write a letter to their manager saying you wont' be returning. Thats just pure cheek.

Some tight arses here tbh.

I will tip 10% as standard in the UK. More or less depending on other countries and cultures. It's only recently that legislation has been passed to prevent companies paying below minimum wage and making it up via tips (à la Café Rouge) & as such the staff have suffered. I will only pay a tip by cash directly to the person who has served me. If it is done via card I won't tip as it is very likely that the actual staff member you are tipping won't get the money.

you will find most places share the tips between the kithcen and the front of house staff

the place should be trying to give you a high level of service as to ensure you return regardless of wether you tip or not.

if they arent then its a crappy place whos failing the customer.

tip jars placed near the door or counter are OK, you can tip if you like without feeling under pressure to do so and without the person knowing how much.

tipping is out of control anyway tipping used to be the price of a beer or some such not an expected percentage.

they are not on commision its a bloody tip its suposed to be small and they are suposed to see it as an act of kindess for the service they provide.

if you google "should i tip" some of the article you find really make me angry they are wrote almost like a sob story and full of lies half the time

I really cannot forsee any circumstance in a restaurant, short of the heimlich manouvre, where a waiter/waitress can go 'above and beyond'. They are paid to look after you, bring your food/orders and make sure everything is ok and they already get paid to do all of that. Maybe I should start asking for 10% on every deskside breakfix.

I normally do tip if the person is polite and decent. I have had quite a few experiences in restaurants where the waitress/waiter is so rude that I don't leave a tip and I really do not feel bad for it.

Sometimes I do wonder where my tip actually goes. Does it go in the pocket of the person that served me or does it go in one big pot to be shared out? I think this is something we should know before hand, I want the person serving me to get my tip in full.

^ :D:D

but tips - never give them unless the waiter does something awesome like breakdance all the way to my table without spilling any food. (I'm still waiting for this to happen).

I never tip, simply don't see the point, I also don't see how a waiter can go above and byond the call of duty for you, if he/she went out to my car while I was eating, washed, polished and vaccumed it, then that's beyond the call of duty, what have you tippers experienced as beyond the call of duty?

As for tipping for fantastic food? No.

Their tip is my repeat custom.

As I understand it some may argue:

Then what is it that they are getting paid for?

The Bella Italia staff at Duke St, London seem more than comfortable asking for more money.

If I was you in the above situation, I would have said I had every intention of giving you a generous tip until you became pushy so there for you get sweet fa:).

I tip when the service is awesome so never over here. When in canada having a chat with the waitress at one of the hotels I was staying at for a few days I mentioned there chips where the most vile thing I had ever eating as they have skin on each end and on one side. Supposedly no one notices this lol . Next meal I orderd she had mentioned to the chef and he had hand peeled them for me. She got double what I paid as a tip for her and the chef and I got hand peeled chips for 3 days now thats service worthy of tipping :D
