Tip

At my local curry house I asked the waiter if he gets all the tips

He told me that the tips are used to subsidse the minimum wage and only when they exceed this do they get them, well that is the theory but in practice he said they never do

so I have now stopped tipping there

That's illegal now, and rightly so.

I wont tip for anything in a restaurant unless I really think they added something to my dining experience.
I've been in places where the service was intrusive, always asking every 3 minutes if "everything is ok" or "would i like anything else." So over bearing it put me off my meal. Ended up saying please shut up leave us alone. We ate and left ASAP.

1 exception to my rule was when i was working down in SA. Last night before a flight home 4 of us went to some steakhouse place, giant booths, food was decent enough. We gave every coin we had to the coloured guys working the tables. (no **** there must have been 30 waiters to 3 tables of people it was utterly bizarre) We didn't count how much it was but they were well happy and i was too. It made their night haha - must have been a couple of hundred rand thinking about it. we had a huge pocketful
each.

Black cab drivers - I always tend to tip them, usually round it up to the nearest pound. God knows why though.. I usually get a cab back from the station (late nights) and to my house its 8 quid ! bus is £1 - i really need to stop doing that :O

One of my pet peeves is having a big old meal with 12 or so people and 1 **** decides that its a good game to show "who can tip the most" Guilt tripping the rest, regardless of how crap the service was. THis isnt the US - this is the UK tips are earned not deserved.

Delivery guy ?? Pffft i wouldn't tip him in a million years. Its his job. If he/she is lucky they can keep the change if its a £14.99 large pizza and im paying with a £10 and a £5.

Postman, Dustman : i know plenty of people that give them Xmas cards with a £5 or £10 note slipped inside. Again this blows my mind..... Ive yet to have my rubbish strews across my garden or my mail dumped. (ps if you read this and do my street i love you really)

one year our windows cleaners didnt come for 3 weeks then turned up on christmas eve to wash the windows

no tip for you! cheeky buggers

It's pretty tedious in America. I remember my parents going to a steakhouse over there, but didn't really enjoy the food. They left without leaving a tip and the chef chased them down the street. Bizarre.

I normally always tip but I refuse to ever pay a "service charge" that has been added to my bill as I rather give the waiter/waitress a tip in coins so I know it goes to them.

Last place that added a service charge to my bill ended up tipless as it took them 20 freaking minutes to remove it from my bill and print me a new one, what the ****!

As has been said earlier, and in the countless previous threads on the subject...

I don't tip unless they go above and beyond their station. Ensuring my food is correct, that they are friendly and the like are part of their jobs. To do otherwise is simply an attempt to appear flush with wealth (edit: and to satisfy some self-important desire to seem 'good' or 'better' than your fellow man. Or a response to the fear of being judged negatively), and any employee that expects a tip deserves none.

I don't tip anybody, I expect the job to be done correctly for the wage they are paid, no-one ever tips me for making sure they get a competent service.

i would never ever tip in this country, there's a minimum wage for a reason and i'm expected to do my job well without hint of a tip, why is that not the same for them?

******* scroungers.

edit: unless she's bloody fit and gives me a dirty (in a good way) look, then and only then might i tip.

In the US, tips are expected because wages for waiting staff are so low.

In the UK, we have a national minimum wage to protect them against this, therefore any tip should only be for service above and beyond the call of duty.

thats not true, minimum wage doesnt protect against this except in theory, in the US its much worse, but in the UK its still bad.

More importantly national minimum wage is national, not taking into consideration regional disparities in the cost of living.

That said my view is that i really dont care about their quality of life, i only tip because it means i get better service from that place because i visit it often, i talk to the staff i am friendly with them, i tip, and this means i usually get served before others, food is better and i do sometimes see other people annoyed about this. --> Same in a couple of bars i go to often, i push in and get my drinks immediately while other people wait for 10 minutes, i get the chilled glasses when its busy, i get better drinks, i dont get the error leftovers, i.e. someone pours the wrong drink, random dude asks for drink 10 minutes later and he gets it. Its for completely selfish reasons why i do this. Now why you people dont copy me, i dont know, i am assuming that you can afford to give a few pounds away, unless ofcourse the service is bad, and some people are rude, but thats the minority.
