Tipping

Waitors and bar staff expect it from EVERY customer
I work in a bar over the summer and will be doing so this Xmas hols as well. I DON'T expect a tip from anyone. I get paid pretty decent wages by my boss who is always around to help me out if I need it. The regular customers are friendly and I know most of their names and they know mine.

I'm always polite and friendly because I expect that of myself. I'm not fishing for a tip. Getting paid £5+ an hour is a bonus for me, every little helps so any tips I get are a bonus on top of that. I certainly don't expect a customer to leave a tip.

And tips ARE taxed. The tips go into a box and then every month the son-in-law who works as the restaurant manager works out who has been working that month and proportionally hands out our share of the tips that way. So the more hours we work, the bigger our share of the tips, minus the tax of course.

Found this on Wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tip

Ironically I started watching the beginning of that last night. I was quite tired and went to bed pretty much when that scene ended.

There's minimum wage, so I don't feel it neccesary that you had to tip. Only tip if you feel that you recieved a great service, in this case you did not, therefore no tip for busboy.

I do agree with Mr.Pink though.

Its not tight to not give people money. I have taken time to reply to your post, which will inturn may make your day more intresting. Please e-mail me to where you can send your money? didnt think so. Yet again - ITS THERE JOB, ITS THERE CHOICE TO WORK FOR THE WAGES THE AGREED!

You are paying for there service (its included in the bill already)

*their.

I said it sounds pretty tight. As in the way he said it. My argument from the beginning has only been to point out that some waiters might not get paid a decent enough wage, and rely on tips. Therefore not tipping 'as a rule' is a bit unfair.

If nobody tipped, i reckon we'd all get served in restaurants by sullen, bored-looking staff who couldnt care less whether or not you got the right food, or whether or not is was even lukewarm!

Well, they they wouldn't be doing their job that they are paid for then. There's plenty of other people who will do it, even if they have a slight Polish accent.

I think if you have worked in the industry yourself you know when to tip and when not to - I know I do.

If the meal and service was good - I tip, if the service was exceptional I tip and make sure the waiter/waitress who served me gets the tip.

If the meal and the service was shoddy = no tip.

My friends usually roll eyes me if I don't put in for a tip.. but hey I've got no tip before when I worked as a waitress and when there's a good reason why you put up with it.

Why? They'd just be putting themselves at risk of getting the sack. I expect good service from anywhere I am giving money to, without having to give extra money on top. Do you have to tip the mechanic in the garage? Do you have to tip the checkout girl at the supermarket?

Yup can't put it better than that really. Whenever I go out for dinner with my Mum and brother we sometimes discuss the tips. My brother thinks we are cheap but my Mum and I often agree the service wasn't great. Last time we went to Beefeater's the waiter took ages with our drinks order. He even asked us what we ordered again. Didn't you write it down then?

First of all crap service and crap food....well i sure as hell wouldnt tip either tbh. I'll only tip if i feel the food and service were good enough to warrant it simple as that. Mind you ive never had bad service or food so i usually tip anyways...guess ive been lucky in that respect.

Usually tip between 10-15% of the bill..again dependant on the service and food quality.

I automatically started thinking bout tht scene when opening this thread lol.

I'm quite pathetic when it comes to tips, i believe in only tipping if it was good service, however i'm very weak and end up tipping even if it wasnt great ;/

Why is it only done in restaurants though? Checkout operators are usually on equally bad wages yet no one tips them. It seems its only done out of a precedence set yonks ago. Really a waiters/ress pay should be proportional to their job like every other job. Why is it the only job that is allegedly under paid leading to a requirement for tips to balance it out. It would be better if people went out of their way to provide a good service purely for job satisfaction rather than monetary gain.

Have you seen those TV programmes about how hotel/restaurant/airline staff take revenge on customers they don't like? ;)

PS - best not go to America either. A tip is expected there. :)

Im not against voluntary tipping but if i was expected to I wouldnt do it on principle. Also in america the exchange rate to our country and the price of the meals over there mean I'd get a good meal, give a decent tip and still spend less on what I would have paid in the UK lol

Thats what i dont understand either. You dont tip your GP, car mechanic or your lecturers, or the postman for delivering the mail on time. Why would you tip for something that you have paid for?? I wouldnt tip if it wasnt for peer pressure from others im eating with.

I find it a bit rude if you have to give one. Ill give a higher/lower tip based on how well the service was and how nice the food was. If its rubbish, they get nothing, if its good ill leave a few quid.

Im *** same with take away, if the delivery guy is on time or early, youll get tipped, if your late then nothing.
