Tips for 1st time PC gamer

Righto.
Just had a game of deathmatch against bots and got ~18K 9D (on hard).
Had a game of deathmatch online and got wasted - seemed to be a lot of spawn raping going on...maybe I was just unlucky though.
Better than yesterday anyway, will continue - got to beat my son someday.

Over a year after buying my first PC game and I still suck at competitive FPS'. I just stick to co-op FPS on PC and maybe a little ARMA 3 king of the hill. There are lots of amazing strategy games and RPG's to be found on PC though.

A little frustrating when you get capped by a guy with a pistol whom you started shooting in the back with the AK - he then turns around and shoots you in the head.
Suppose I could benefit from a bit better aim as when they don't go down after a few bullets I start to spray and prey which ends badly for me.

Top tip!

Learn to use the mouse, I know it sounds stupid but know your mouse and learn the movements.

I cannot for the life of me play FPS with a controller it just dont feal right.

Once you on it you will know!

you'll soon get the hang of it,mouse and keyboard is a must for fps

some 5.1 surround speakers/headphones will help with your gaming surroundings, you'll be able to tell where your enemies are approaching/shooting from

Advice: I suggest you go into the Graphics card section and make a thread disparaging Nvidia/AMD...enjoy!!

OP join some beginner servers on csgo, and also mess about with spraying gun patterns against a wall. Enjoy the mouse and keyboard, you will soon find it more accurate than a control pad :D

My tip is that if you are saving for something, or if you have no disposable income, run away and go back to console gaming. PC parts have ruined my financial comfort! :p

Just keep on. You say you play piano, but I'm guessing you weren't as good as you are today when you first started out; at some point you had to put hundreds of hours if not more into scales ... this will be no different - you're just going to have to run around on the various maps for hundreds of hours of being a bit cack-handed before how you use your controls and how you react to different terrain or situations in using those controls becomes more natural to you. It's all muscle memory at the end of the day.

I'm on a A10 5800k with no overclock.
Gfx seem ok but now wondering if I should put a 1GB 6670 in that I have lying around from an upgrade to my sons PC with a 270.

OP - One thing I do which is probably different to most is rather than use 'wasd' for movement and the surrounding keys, is use the directional arrows near the number pad and right ctrl, shift, enter and return etc for reload, duck, jump etc. It has helped my fat fingers! Am I in a minority of 1??

First response is the best. Practice, lot's of it. It won't just 'happen', you will start picking up how to use them naturally sooner or later.

It's muscle memory. Play some twitch shooters and you'll be good in no time.

I'm alright now with the keys as I use the wasd and shift to walk with caps being zoom, changed mouse 2 to duck, don't really use the scoped weapons so not sure if caps is ok for that.
It's just the accuracy and not spraying I struggle with atm...
I often lose out when face to face and seem to get sniped from across the screen with AKs quite a lot.
I have now played around 4 hrs and I am getting better.

CS:GO is probably one of the worst games for you to be playing as your first PC game. The majority of people playing it have been playing the CS games for many many years and are going to be vastly better than you at the game. It would be a very steep learning curve for a beginner starting now to say the least. If you want to improve though you will just have to stick at it and learn how the maps work. It is a very different game to COD.

If you're more comfortable with that I don't think it would be an issue, the accuracy is as much about being able to aim as it is just learning the maps and where people are likely to be, as a lot of the time if you know where people are likely to be you can aim at their head and shoot before you know they are there.

Have a look at the war owls videos on YouTube, he has a hefty number of tutorials on all the aspects of the game which will give you a good grounding and give you ideas to work on, death match is the place to practice as that's what a lot of people are doing, I like to run around with an ak trying to one shot headshot people, if I miss I'll either suicide or let them kill me. That will not only improve your aim with the ak but will help in pistol rounds as it's the best way to kill someone as all weapons are one shot kills to the head in the first round.

For starting out it might be best to play offline with bots, set them to harmless so all they do is look at you and try to kill them with one shot with the ak. If you miss you suicide and start again, at first it will take you ages to line up and take the shots but with practice you will get quicker and quicker :D
