Tips for 1st time PC gamer

I usually play cod zombies on xbox 360 and trials hd but decided to download CS:GO yesterday after reading the "what game are you playing" thread.

Turns out I suck at PC gaming...only had an hour on it but can't seem to get used to the mouse and keyboard....my accuracy is horrible and keep pressing shift instead of ctrl.
I have fairly big hands and play the piano and guitar but when I play a game it seems like rigor mortis has set in.

Anyone have any (USEFUL) tips ?

Try using ESDF instead of WASD.

EDIT: CS is a terrible game to start with, it's not a very easy game to jump into, if you don't know the recoil patterns on each gun you will just get destroyed.

just bought the Bioshock bundle.

A good start, the Orange box on steam would also be a good place to start. Play lots and lots of single FPS's, put the time in and you'll be rewarded. Don't as suggested get stuck into online games immediately.
CS was probably one of the worst to start with as its full of hardcore nuts who think they are in the SAS and have 1 million hours sunk into the game and can be very unfriendly in the wrong place.

Agree with the CS:GO comments. I'm pretty good at FPS games but get destroyed on CS.
And try not to change the keys around as WASD is pretty much de facto for key bindings and you'll forever be changing every game you'll ever own (and get annoyed at the ones you can't)

Yep, definitely stick with WASD if you can, will help massively in the long run.

Single player FPS games are good to get started, as echo'ed above CSGO is gonna be tough to get into, as long as you have fun playing though its all good!

As much as people complain about them I have always enjoyed doing the COD and BF series campaigns.

Try Team Fortress 2 as well, believe its free now and although I never got into it (due to a heavy CSS addiction at the time) its extremely popular.

The other thing is that many find the ability of PC gamers to be higher than console gamers, I find less casual gamers on PC, and many PC gamers are far more competitive and serious than console.

Get a gaming mouse.

Get a gaming keyboard.

Get a gaming monitor.

Get a gaming headset.

Make sure you use WSAD and not the arrow keys (I played 2 years of DF BHD on arrow keys and severely hurt my left wrists before seeing the light).

@ OP, you are not listening to peeps, start with SP campaigns, you will get owned in MP with decent players.

Playing MP and against better players also helps you improve at a way faster rate :)

Let him do what he wants if he is having fun, playing more only helps.

A little frustrating when you get capped by a guy with a pistol whom you started shooting in the back with the AK - he then turns around and shoots you in the head.
Suppose I could benefit from a bit better aim as when they don't go down after a few bullets I start to spray and prey which ends badly for me.

I've played every other version of CS so assuming it's the same in :GO... the two main skills with the AK in particular are 1. using bursts of shots (2-3 at a time) when at range, and 2. controlling the recoil when spraying up close (by moving the mouse downwards to compensate).

As said by others, practice makes perfect!

Don't start playing online you'll just get frustrated heh - find a good single player game you'll enjoy that has FPS controls and you should pick it up fairly quickly.

This for sure.
Work your way through something like Half Life 1 or 2.

alternatively try something like TF2 where accuracy is less important. Might help you get used to the controls

Imo, the Portal games would be a great place to start for someone new to using a kb/m. They will get you used to the movement and aiming, but in a game where aiming is not that important and doesn't have to be very precise. I can't think of a better introduction tbh.

Practice, practice, practice i'm afraid. That is how I got to the level I got to in Quake2/3/4. The more you play the more you learn everything about the game/engine/maps/angles to shoot from/what to do what different situations etc.

No it does not, it gets him killed every time and fed up.

SP is the way to go and those Portal suggestions will help.

He can do what he likes no skin of my nose but he is asking and ignoring the advise of others.

Common sense tell you this.

I'm not ignoring anyone...just having a play.
I have played a few maps with bots and a few maps online.

I just played an hour of Bioshock and can't believe how immersive it is, only playing through on medium difficulty atm but enjoying it.
I expect this game to be pretty samey from here on in although I've not had to deal with the big daddies yet...

I plugged the gpu in last night for hybrid xfire and ended up having to reset cmos after a botched bios setting and getting no display.
Took me an hour of pratting around instead of the 10 mins it should have took...will have to read the instructions next time.

Mouse is a Gigabyte M6880 ( paid around a fiver for it brand new) and my keyboard is one that came with a compaq PC around 5 years ago but was probably new out around 10 years ago, it's not a gaming KB but as I'm not familiar with the differences I think this will suffice...for now.

I can only echo...

Get a comfortable (for you) gaming mouse and surface (I like zowie mice), get a gaming headset (5.1) or you will not have a clue what is going on around you by ear. I simply could not play without a 5.1 headset nowadays!

Make sure 'A' and 'D' are set to strafe (not turn) , you will need 'Q' and 'E' for other binding later on.

Example, 'shift + E' is my throwing key bind ('E' is my lean).

Getting comfortable with your keybinding really helps...

You dont *need* a gaming keyboard, as long as it is comfortable (for you). But a mechanical keyboard can give some extra response when using crutial buttons at the right time...
