I'm looking to buy my first domain, and use it for hosting images, maybe a blog, email accounts etc. Does anyone have any tips? At the moment I was just going to register a .com one through somewhere like UK2.net.

you'll need to register your domain name, and get some hosting as well. visit ochostreview (in the HGnP sticky) to browse the ISPs used by OcUK members.

i personally use Vidahost to host my website. they offer domain regging and hosting, which is basically what you're after.

If you're after some recommendations, take a look at Ochostreview...apart from that, there's not much to it - the extension you choose doesn't really make any difference whatsoever :)

Pretty much all hosts will have a nice control panel where you can setup e-mail accounts, scripts (such as photo galleries, blogs etc) and the like with a couple of clicks so that's nice and simple, and most will also provide you with a webmail interface as well as the standard POP3/SMTP/IMAP methods of retrieving your e-mail (you need at least POP3&SMTP to use a desktop-based client like Outlook.)

Edit: Hey, there were no replies when I started typing :(

Thanks for the quick replies m8's!

Basically what I want is;

- Persistent domain name
- Email addresses (up to 10 I guess)
- Hosting for files, images etc
- Ability to host my own forum(s) - PHP?
- Ability to host blog (although I already have a blogger one)

Tip: Opt out of providing your address for whois information - My information was stolen and used to register a .info version of my site when they were free. The gits used my domains email as the reply so I got all the abuse and return spam from their copious spammage. I've since cancelled the domain and am about to register another one which I'll be keeping strictly anon!
