Tips for downloading?

The thing is you say ISP ISP ISP you lot go on about it... but how is it the ISP, its where you are, what your on, how your line handles it, how close you are to the exchange... and i have compared like 20-30 ISP's to the one im on and mine was the best...

I just ned help with the downloading, my computer and router settings to allow more... thats all. not changing my ISP...

1. Your ADSL performance isn't based on your distance from the exchange but the "quality" of the line i.e. available noise margin and attenuation
2. How have you been able to compare Demon with 20-30 ISPs?

websites... comparison website... feedback websites... done my research.. had 3 weeks to do so...

What speeds do you actually get downloading?
not applicable.

You need to provide line stats and results from a download test.

Your research carries merit but isn't exactly scientific as you have no idea how those isps would perform on your exchange/line.

What do you mean N/A? We don't even know the degree of the problem.
All i want to know are tips on enhancing performance... you dont need any information for that do you? all i need is tutorials, instructions, tips... tricks...

im in the stabilising process of my connection as i have just been ADSL enabled so once thats over (few days) then id like to get the best from what i have...

For all we know you're already getting the best speeds possible. We won't know otherwise unless you tell us.

Oh and if you change your ISP to Be, you'll get faster speeds. ;)

To be completly honest from what I know there isn't any quick fix to better speeds. If you did post your download speeds we could tell you whether they needed improving or not?

I tried them a while back TCP optimizing, the lot it's really mostly depenent on your connection I know I saw no difference if anything it became unstable.

-edit-

Try downloading big files if you can get 600/700+ that's decent. You said before you got a 5mb on your speed test?

is this any good then?? i dont know much about anything bigger then 2mb and my 2mb was poor (at a different address then my current home) so i dont even know what standards im meant to be at now im at 8mb...

No, not good at all.

Umm, you definietly have a stuck IP profile. You're getting 0.1mb >_<

However, you're getting the proper speed from your IP profile so once it's fixed, your speeds will be good.

If you're still on the 10 day "training period" then this might resolve itself after the 10 days. if not, phone up your ISP and tell them you have a stuck IP profile.

What exactly is the IP profile?

So a high noise margin is a good thing!? Mine fluxuates between 5db and 2db

Get 320kb/second on a good server when I'm connected to an 88.* IP (homecall has a massive set of IPs, 88.* seem to be the good ones) Now I think about it, thats nowhere near the 8meg I should be getting! Still, much better than the 512k i had before ;p

Not much better than 56Kbps to be honest, try from a different computer.

Not going to help when the BRAS limit (AKA IP Profile) is at 135kbps, though I'd only expect to see a profile that low if it was the result of a low sync event...
