Titanic submersible confirmed destroyed with loss of all five souls onboard.

If they took on enough water they'd never be able to ascend?
Yes.

Just watched the vid about the transcript, so not only was it descending about 50% quicker than it should, but it looks like after releasing the ballast and the external frame and using the vertical thruster they were still only able to do 7m a minute upwards. At that rate, it would have taken them well over 8 hours to get back to the surface, so the sub was substantially heavier than expected.

All depends on whether it's real. Looks like the investigators actually have a "black box" to examine from the sub.

they must have been recording data from those strain/listening devices on the hull - but whether an SSD would survive -
even a real black box on an airplane would that be robust at 4K.

at the same time that some of the media was reporting black boxes 2 weeks ago, others had talked about recovering telemetry data from the mothership - so I had thought there was some confused reporting.

Yeah, that was my impression, it's possible the electronics for that were mounted outside the pressure hold in it's own enclosure at the rear. Most of that assembly that was under the rear cowl looks to have been recovered.

just watched the vid of the supposed transcript. i hope to **** Rush was able to keep those poor sods calm for their final minutes. or i wonder did his fantasy crumble when faced with, quite literally, crushing reality. and he died in abject terror. i hope the former for those he took with him, for him personally, i hope it was the latter.

Is there a text link of this instead of watching through dragged out 20 minute videos?

I think the original video was posted by someone from Pakistan so this longer version may be better
All good now, I just wanted the text, dont need a YT creator walking me through it slowly.

So assuming this transcript is real, its what I was thinking they were aware of issues, crackling sound especially.

Was having a soak in the bath earlier, and it occurred to me that carbon fibre weave could have a peculiar failure mode that would explain what was seen in the transcript (if it's legit). The flex of the carbon fibre over the repeated dives would be concentrated just before the joint to the titanium end cap, as this is where it would be most rigid. What this means is that this area would have likely had the layers separate in a way that rather than have a direct path to the inside of the sub, would have had a tortuous path akin to labyrinth style trims found in high pressure control valves. This means that there could be a flow of water into the sub, that resulted in water at much lower pressure entering the sub itself. Potentially even with a bit of cavitation.

What does cavitation sound like in pressure control valves? It makes a crackling noise.

The catastropic failure of the hull spared them a much slower death (ultimately of hypothermia I would guess as it slowly filled with slightly above freezing water). The sub was likely already lost, as it was it looked like it would take 8 hours to reach the surface and if it was slowling taking on water that would increase to the point it would never be able to return and ultimately just sink to the seabed.

I read a sky article a few days ago which said they would have been in total darkness, to save the lights for when they were down there, listening to some of their music and watching the bio-luminescence creatures.

I think I prefer it to have been that way rather than what the video was suggesting!

cant fathom what they must have felt like in the moments upto it, the fear of impending doom if it were me i would have had a big smile on my face before being minced up and fed to the fishes.
