Hey all, i've been thinking for a few weeks now...should i geta DS...?

The reason i'm curious is mainly that i have a 360, i have a decent PC, but i do like the size, fun, and functionality of the DS (Specially for gaming when working as i work from home via the pc) i've not really had much experience apart from seeing my gf's sister playing Harvest Moon, which looked pretty fun!

Mario Kart looks pretty nice, brain training & trauma centre (i think?) look good fun, and it'd be nice to be able to get my gf involved too as i think its the handheld console that would appeal to her the most.

My only real previous handheld experences were borrowing a friends atari lynx for 2 weeks way back when, and owning a psp for roughly a month where i got a bit bored of ridge racer & what few games were out then and sold it on for a nice tidy profit :)

Any advice/opnions along with fun games would be really appreciated!

I love racing, fighting, wrestling, sports games, but i'm pretty open to anything..

Nintendogs fun? :D

Thanks again!

Tim

Meh. It's entertaining at first, but it quickly gets rather dull. There's not really enough longevity to it, as after a while, all you're doing is the barest chores and getting nothing in return and it's like "well what's the point?" I wouldn't bother, unless it was cheap.

However, you should definitely get a DS, because overall, they're fantastic handhelds.

We have got a reasonable gaming PC, Xbox 360, Wii, DS, several old consoles still connected and used to own a PSP.
If I had to start again the DS would probably be the first system I would buy :) The DS currently has 16 games in the Japanese top 20.

To be honest, thres very little of that sort of game on the DS. For me, the DS gets used for much more original game concepts like Trauma Centre. I do have Mario Kart but that is the only game that would fit on your list.
It is an excellent handheld but don't buy one expecting a portable console type experience, the PSP is more suited to that. Buy one with an open mind and you will be thoroughly rewarded with some true gems!

get a DS!! i have psp and DS. my psp is very rarely used but my ds does get used a lot.

get

Pheonix Wright 1 and 2
Hotel Dusk
Trauma Centre
Advance Wars
Mario Kart

and i think thats all the games i got...

Wisest words I've seen on OcUK for a long time.

Seening as you work from home and there for have easy acess to a home console the DS would be a good choice seeing as it will give you some thing different to what you are playing.

Oh, get Pheonix Wright ;)

Great little console... completely different to what I was expecting it to be. I also like playing around with Electroplankton (see here). It's fun "games" like this and Brain Training that I like on the DS. I can play "normal" games on other consoles/PC.

Oh, and the DS and the Wii are the only consoles to have got my missus interested in gaming (other than the Sims which she used to play a bit), so I think your gf will get involved too.

Yep, i'm aware of that fact, and given what people have said in the past and in here, its deifnitely worth having just for what a difference it is! I think it would be a fun addition to my games etc.. without costing too much and providing a new type of game with all the brain training, trauma centre etc.. :)

What would be a good price to be paying for a DS now? maybe + Trauma Centre & Brain Training :)

Thinking of the DS Lite (obviously :)) in black or white!

I bought me and my girlfriend a DS Lite, fantastic little things. So far i've got New Super Mario Bros (awesome) Mario 64, Big Brain Academy + Theme Park.

All fantastic games.

Go for it, they're only around £99.99. Well worth it.

Both me and the wife have DS Lites (Mine in black, her's in white).
I never thought I'd see the day where we had two of the same "console" in the house.
However I bought her's for her birthday and I ended up wanting to play it so often I had to get my own.
Hotel Dusk is excellent and my wife has just started on the newer Phoenix Wright game and is loving it.
Then you've got classics like Mario Kart etc.

Lovely little console and at only £99 a real bargain.
Import games you can get for around the £20 mark.
Even the "UK Spec" games can be had for £25 delivered, so really not too badly priced.

Yeah they are at the perfect price point really. This is something Nintendo have done exceptionally well with in both the DS and Wii designs. Kept the costs down so the mass market can afford them by the bucket load, whilst Nintendo still make a profit on all units sold.

The second hand games market for the DS is also a good plus point. Last summer i bought a few of my games brand new for £16.15 (A shop at home in Jersey had them for £17.93 new and i get 10% student discount). The games are still going for around £15 inc. postage i can sell mine at only a small loss. Even buying them online for £22-£25 there is not much lost for a year old game. They have been consistently going for £15ish for a while now and i don't see the price reducing all that much. It seems the sweet spot of s/h sales.
It is just a shame that the shop at home now sells them at £25 hmph. Cheaper getting them online with VAT off now!

All i need to do is find Yoshi's Island and Elite Beat Agents s/h for a good price.

The new final fantasy tactics game is coming out on the DS soon, that should be amazing.

There's also zelda and a few others on there way. DS has much better games than the PSP on the whole.

If you want to play Console games that are more traditional and have plenty of flexibility for other stuff like movies and music, the PSP is the way forward.

If you want to have lots of fun playingmore original nintendesque games, get the DS.

I have both, and to be honest they can't really be compared as they are so differrent.

Well, i took the dive today and got alovely Black DS Lite :)

Actually ran out to get it near closing time as i skipped out of work early to do so and sort a few other things, so don't actually have any games yet as i didn't want to rush & buy the wrong ones (The shopkeepers body language showed me he'd be closing VERY soon! hehe)

I'm thinking along the line sof one of the brain games, and Trauma Center to start off, and then see where things take me from there! :D
