To raptor or not to raptor

I currently have 2 80Gb Hitachi drives in Raid 0. I am fed up with backing up on DVD's so have decided to get a cheap used 36Gb raptor (Thay have long warranties so no worries about it going wrong) to replace my Hitachis as the main drive.

1) How much faster is 1 36Gb raptor than 2 Hitachis in RAID 0?
Will Battlefield 2 load faster or slower?
Anyone got any relevant (simple) benchmarks?

2) What about the difference between 8Mb and 16Mb cache versions

3) How much louder is it?

Well mate.... am getting my 16MB 74gb raptor on monday so ill let you know regarding the noise. 16MB version is newer and faster or so they say.

If this graph is accurate then it's more a case of how much slower the Raptor would be:

My 250GB WD drive vs the stock Raptor 36GB result. I'd imagine your RAID'd hitachis would be faster than my single drive.
 
Ahh, but look at read, which is more important, the gap isn't so large anymore. I am not a fan of a Raptor, I will always go for more space than a faster drive.
 
I felt like trying out a Windows install with my 2 new disks in RAID0 and got this:

Seek time is faster on the Raptor but my set pulls ahead with average read & burst. I've seen better results with the Seagate 7200.10s as well, but they cost a bit more. The Raptor 74GB costs about the same as my RAID set and is faster than the 36GB one.

I'm not convinced moving from a RAID0 set to a Raptor would give you any real benefit tbh, depending on the quality/speed of your current drives that is.

I would have thought you will be disaapointed.Its not really worth it in my book.The 36gig raptors are noisey.And will be not that much faster (if at all) with having Raid 0 on two 7200 drives.

I have my OS, Games etc on a 150GIG raptor and all my other stuff on terabyte Hdd's.And I would not go back to a normal disk for windows.

I did try two 36gig raptors in Raid 0 but my single 150gig raptor is faster and not as much hassle.

If you really want a raptor go for the 74gig 16mb cache one rather than the old 8mb cache 36gig.

Alternatively you could get another two disks and go Raid 5

Why do people always say that the 36Gb is loud and slow. Yes the OLD one is, but the new 16Mb cache one is the same speed as the 150Gb one, and in some instances even faster.

I was going on the older version of the 36 raptor due to the op's opening post.

If the OP can get away with 36Gb, wouldn't it be better and cheaper to go with a 16Mb cache 36Gb raptor instead.

and all my other stuff on terabyte Hdd's.

Slightly OT, are those 1Tb drives? I could do with a massive one for backup soon and don't really have space for 2x500Gb.

Ok my apologies just that to many jump in without reading post's... :p

The 36 gig 16mb raptor is expensive for what it is.He would be better getting another big drive for storage and keeping his raid 0 setup as boot.

No I have 1Tb of storage lol not a 1Tb drive.I think the biggest they do is 750 gig IIRC.
 
Thanks a lot. Looks like I will just get a cheapo drive to do regular backups on. A B-Grade one perhaps? or one on eBay which still has its warranty.
